Say goodbye to Twinkies?

http://money.cnn.com/2012/11/16/news/companies/hostess-closing/

In the face of a union strike, Hostess shuts down its operations. They will try to sell their assets so another company may take over.

Re: Say goodbye to Twinkies?

  • I'm guess that if they do sell that they will ramp up operations in non-union states and may not re-hire laid off workers that refused to go back to work under Hostess.

  • The last time Hostess came out of bankruptcy, in 2004, the workers took big pay cuts and benefit cuts to help the company get back on its feet. That money instead went to give the executives big bonuses. That's why they refused to do it again this time.

Shame on these greedy executives who would rather save the company only on the backs of workers rather than making sacrifices themselves.

I didn't know this .  now it makes more sense to me why they didn't give up.

  • It's important to know that there are two union groups involved here. The larger union, the Teamsters, had an agreement all worked out and approved by the workers/management. But, a smaller union, focusing solely on the bakers, refused to permit the agreement. It was the smaller group that derailed the agreement from going through.

Also, this is a privately held company so the financial saren't available for public viewing.

My understanding is that they have been mismanaged for years. Ick.

Is it worth it though, to dig in your heels and then have your whole company go under?

On principle, I think yes. But then all those people need jobs, and if I were one of them, I'd probably do my best to keep my job.

I wonder if the smaller union employees are shocked at this outcome...not expecting it?

This is why the middle and working classes are always at the mercy of the rich and powerful. :(

  • That's the risk Unions take when they decide to take on "The Man". The Man might just decide not to play ball anymore. And it is *his right* to do so. It's called freedom of association and private property rights. You are not entitled to anything just because of your place of employ. You are allowed to negotiate with your employer, but if you want to play hardball...
  • But the Hostess thing has nothing to do with unions.

we went on a zinger run last night. DH was on a mission.  we had to go to 3 gas stations and 1 grocery store to get all that he wanted and it really wasn't that much. the grocery store told us they sold out of all snack cakes just 2 hours after the announcement.  They are nearly impossible to find right now except on ebay.

  • Little Debbie snack cakes are still available and (IMHO) they blow Hostess out of the water.  Swiss Cake Rolls rock!
