Has anyone ever had a dog that seemed to be constantly hungry? Growing up we had dogs, and they were always eager for extra treats, but this seems beyond that. She's a good weight, the vet thinks the food and amount is right, but unless I'm distracting her with something else she just haunts her food bowl and stares at me.
She was a rescue, she was found wondering in the woods with her brother. They were in bad shape, she had every type of worm I can name when she came to us. She has been obsessed with food since day one, and I'm sure it's from being half starved, but she isn't getting any better.
Is this just something that might pass? Should I consider feeding her the same amount but spread out more frequently? She's not at all food agressive, just always pathetic about it!
Re: perpetually starving dog
how long have you had her? i would think its connected to her time as a stray. As long as the vet is happy with her weight i am sure she is fine. i would give it more time if she hasnt been with you guys long. And who knows how long she was left wandering in the woods before she was rescued. poor girl!
That's kind of what I figured. I just wasn't sure if there is anything else I should be doing. She looks so anxious about it sometimes.
I am sure it is related to her time as a stray. And maybe related to having had worms?
I got one of my cats, Lexi, from the Humane Society and she is the exact same way. I feed both of my cats at the same time the same amount of food. And Cadillac likes to sporadically eat throughout the day. Where Lexi will consume everything. And if Cadillac isn't around she'll eat his food. So that by the time I come home from work she's at the door and begging for more. It's like clockwork.
We've tried just feeding them once a day and it doesn't do anything so we do morning and night. Night we can at least monitor them so that she's not eating all of the food from both dishes.
krose - My cats are just like that, the male Casper will eat ALL the food I put down, even shove the other cat out of the way after he inhales his food. And sometimes he'll eat so much so fast that he barfs it up 15 minutes later, and then is begging for more in an hour.
To the OP, how many times a day are you feeding the dog? Also what type of food?

Our cat is just like this. She steals from the dog (he's a leisure eater). I've taken to dividing her wet food in half and feeding her twice. That way if she does get sick, its less mess to clean up (cream carpet) and she at least have something else coming later. We have a treat ball we half fill with dry food (for the same reason, she'll gobble it all at once) for days she seems overly hungry, not just whiny.
If its driving you nuts i'd try feeding the same amount per day but splitting it up into three feedings (if possible).
My dog was a rescue, found starving in the streets with his brother. He isnt a food hound when it comes to his own food, he'll graze throughout the day. However, everything else is fair game...you can't leave food on counters, he will try to steal it out of your plate while we are sitting at the table eating! It doesn't help he's so tall he doesn't even have to stretch to reach our plates. He steals trash, eats innapropriate things etc.
