Relocating for work

We're trying to figure out the best way to accomplish a move about 4.5 hours away with a 2 yr. old and a newborn, while trying to rent out our house so we can move. Some people say it's easiest to just all go at once, and others say let DH go first, stay in a hotel, then find a place for all of you to move into while I stay here and find renters. Anyone have experience with this or any good advice?  I'm not sure how we'd afford a weekly hotel/motel bill and fuel cost of driving back and forth on top of everything else, but I can't picture us just packing up and moving into a rental sight unseen.

Re: Relocating for work

  • Do you have anyone who can watch your children for a day or two? 4.5 hours away isn't that far to drive and look for somewhere to live with just you and your H. Go and find a place to live and then start moving or get movers.

As for renting your current place it maybe easier to go through a property management company to rent and handle any issues with your renters. Good Luck

  • While I don't have kids, my husband and I were just reunited after 1.5 years of being apart due to job relocation. You never know if you'll get stuck being apart and with kids I think you'll need all the help you can get just for daily living. I wouldn't suggest the "husband going ahead route" unless you can really afford the monetary and emotional stress.

I would suggest taking a day to scout places to live (call ahead for an appointment) since apartments will usually let you plan ahead to move in. Get a professional in on the rental of your home though, there are legal hoops that you probably don't want to get tangled in without help.

    Good luck!
