1st thanksgiving not at childhood home....

my parents just sold their house that has been in our fam since the 1940s. this is my first thanksgiving not there, but at their new place down the shore. Which I am really excited about b/c it's so fun down there, but also would like to do something to either start a new tradition or remember the old house.

any ideas?

thx!

Re: 1st thanksgiving not at childhood home....

  • This isn't holiday related necessarily, but what if someone buys a bottle of wine you save for for consumption until the next Thanksgiving?  DH and I do this for our anniversary.  We go out after dinner and pick out a bottle of wine/liqour.  It sits in our wine rack until our next anniversary.  You could rotate who buys each year and keep it at your parent's new place. When you drink the bottle of whatever each year you all talk about the great memories you shared at the house.

  • oh i like that idea, thanks so much!
  • I don't know how many people are in your family but here are a few fun Thanksgiving traditions I married into:

Each Thanksgiving, we swap who cooks the meal. This year, all the women cooked while the guys relaxed...next year the guys will be in charge of dinner while we put our feet up.

Also, when each person arrived to the house, we wrote down on a piece of paper what we are thankful for (didn't sign our names) and went around the table at dinner. Each person draws a slip and reads it and everyone guesses who that slip belongs to. You can write something serious or add some humor :) !
