Two quick baby related questions if you don't mind:
1. Anyone who delivered at PA Hospital do a tour? Do you have to take the childbirth class for the tour?
2. I have begun to think about pediatricians. I know some have open houses and people interview the doctors. This is all new to me. My OB suggested Society Hill Peds and Center City Peds. We are in South Philly and I know there are a few solo practices and the big CHOP practice at St. Agnes. I am afraid with the big CHOP practice that we would never see the same doctor twice and it would be a 6 hour wait. How do you go about "interviewing" a pediatrician? Does the CHOP practice allow for that? My concern is since LO will be with my mom most of the time during the week and if she needs to take him to the doctor if he is sick, she does not drive.
As always, TIA!
Re: Baby Related
I go to a CHOP practice in Flourtown. I choose the doctor when I schedule, the only time I can't choose is if it's a sick appointment. In that case I get whomever is open. I really love two of the doctors at my sons practice, don't care for the NP and I've never even met any of the other doctors in the two an half years since I've been going.
I never interviewed. My friend went there and they had good hours so I just went with them and I figured if I didn't like the doctor I would switch. What I love about the CHOP practice is that if he were to ever get really sick I would want him treated at CHOP anyway and this way all of his medical records are in their system. I also liked the 24 hour nurse line. I used it a few times in the middle if the night as a new mom and they were always nice and helpful.
our neighbors went to the big CHOP practice they loved it. they always got the same doctor, she even gave them her personal email when they were struggling with feedings.
we go to queens village/south philly pecs. i don't have the heart to change practices they have always been so great to us. it is a drive but worth it for us.
i think amynumbers goes to cc and loves them too.
I delivered at Pennsy. you can just take a tour without a class, but my tour (with the class) was a joke. The guide sold us this load of crap about how no one shares rooms -- a nurse a tour baby care class LOLd when I repeated this.
We love love love CCP. They have one or two nights a month when you can go in and learn about the practice -- or at least the used to. But the quick and dirty -- we are always able to see the same doctor, unless it is a same day sick visit. I have always been able to get a same day sick visit, and they are amazing about returning calls (either a doc or the NP) about sick questions -- including after hours and on weekends.
i have heard some Internet rumblings about people being annoyed by the waits but I am on my second kid and have never had anything more than a ten minute wait. More importantly, I have never ever been rushed during an appointment.
I have experience with Pennsy and CC Peds. I was really happy with both. I think you can do the tour at Pennsy w/out the class, but I'm not 100% sure. Our tour was pretty quick. It was 2.5 years ago, so the rooms were still getting renovated so we didn't get to see much. I know some people who have paid for the "Pavillion" rooms and thought it was worth the money. The care is top-notch...that was what was important to me. DS ended up in the NICU (unexpectedly) for a month and the docs/nurses/lactation consultants were all amazing.
We have since moved to Ardmore but when we were in Grad. Hospital, we went to CC Peds. We really loved it there. Dr. Berger came to visit DS when he was in the NICU at Pennsy several times, and called me on my cell phone many times to check up on him whenever he was sick. Our neonatologist at Pennsy also takes her own kids to CC Peds.
Not sure if you're looking for a daycare too, but we sent DS to My Bright Beginnings in the same building as CC Peds. We were happy there, too. When we moved, I was sad to leave CC Peds and Bright Beginnings.
Thanks again ladies!
Esyn- thanks for the daycare rec, too.
