gifts for parents who have everything

Each year, my parents tell us kids "we don't want you to get us anything" but obviously, they are our parents and we love them and want to! They are collectors who have pleeeeenty of "stuff" so its hard to shop, we tend to get them the same things over and over.

Any ideas for these kind of picky people? :)

Re: gifts for parents who have everything

  • Food.  Booze.  Tickets to something - movie, theater, sports event, concert.

I bake cookies every year for my parents.  They don't bake much for themselves and cookies don't hang around needing to be dusted.  So it's a great gift.

  • we go in on something they wouldn't get for themselves. For example this year we're contributing to getting his deer head mounted (I'm from Michigan, what can I say). Other years we've gone in on a GPS unit, a super nice coffee maker, that sort of thing.
  • how about gift cards for their favourite coffee shop or resturant?

  • If your parents get all the material things they want I would go with an event.  A concert, a play even the opera.

  • my parents are the same here are things we've done in the past

-basket of wine, crackers & cheese

-gift cards to places they like to go to

    -magazine subscriptions

    -tickets to shows

or you can make them a certificate that says that it's good for dinner with you once a month (either at your home or out your treat). Sometimes in this day and age of crazy schedules, older parents appreciate more then anything a few hours with their kids.

  • My parents are the same way.

Last year we got them a cookbook for a new international cuisine and all of the major spices they would need to get started ("Classic Indian Cooking" with cumin, coriander, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, mace, turmeric, garam masala, etc.). You could also do the same with Chinese or Thai and the various sauces needed.

The previous year we found a really good deal on a flat screen TV. I got my siblings to chip in a little to upgrade their giant old school boxy TV into a flat screen.

ditto the cookies or something homemade if your parents do not bake but may have friends drop by during the holidays.

Pictures or photo album of you.

Gift certificate/card for a nice dinner or as pp said tickets to something. Or something like fruit, cheese or wine of the month subscription. (Consumable gifts that do not add to the stuff in their house)

Or plan a special day with them. The gift of time and connecting with family is priceless.

  • MIL's birthday is 12/19, we always get her a Red Lobster GC for her b-day because she and FIL don't go out to eat often (maybe 2 times per year), so it's an excuse to go to her favorite restaurant.

MIL is a computer person and is always printing pictures, so she can always use ink for her printer.  I've also bought her a "membership" packet to shutterfly years ago so she could get a bunch of pics professionally printed.

FIL LOVES history books.  This year we got him a book about haunted barracks, we've gotten him a book about a haunted mansion, books about the St. Louis Cardinals (old school Cards, not anything recent), war books (he was in Vietnam), etc.  He also LOVES cooking, so we thought of getting him a smoker, but it was just not in our budget this year since DH was out of work.

My mom loves to be pampered so I could always get her a GC for a massage.  She also loves technology (she has a laptop, iPhone, and will be getting a tab).

My s-dad is into hunting, 4-wheeling, and hiking.  He just got a new Mustang so my mom suggested a Mustang shirt and/or "Mustang Parking Only" sign, and a book about some Rock music guy (don't even remember the book).

  • I know how you feel! I go through the same thing with my parents every year. Ive been on a kick of just getting them lots of books and pictures of the kids. I lucked out this year though, my mom finally got an iPhone, so I made her a custom iPhone case from Tiny Prints with her favorite picture of the kids. Now I just have to find something for my father...Confused
