DH is getting a big promotion at work. You'll have to trust me when I describe the event. There's a small ceremony with big wigs and a couple speeches. It's company tradition for the person getting the promotion to host a reception afterward for everyone in the department. It may seem backwards, but it's done in the "I couldn't have gotten promoted and done great things without all of you, my team, so thank you" vein. Family and friends are always invited. People
will probably chat and visit for 20-30 minutes. DH expects 50 people.
It doesn't need to be elaborate, but it is more than just putting food in the break room. Feeding fifty people at work at 10 am is just a little strange and has me scratching my head.
DH's favorite breakfast place does breakfast burritos with eggs, potatoes and meat. I know they sound tacky as hell, but they're really tasty and a local tradition, so I could do those as the "main." A fruit tray, of course. Coffee cake if I'm feeling ambitious or store-bought doughnuts if I'm not. Coffee and brunch punch. What else?
The reception will be in a room with a kitchenette attached, so I could heat things on site, but I'm not too keen on that.
PS - follow-up - I'm a bad neighbor and have never invited that neighbor over for tea I'm planning to bake her a pie in a Christmas pie plate for her to keep as a Christmas gift and take it over to her.
Re: Breakfast for 50
Will this be mainly men or women? I don't know that burritos are tacky and if it's something he enjoys I'd go that route. Add the fruit and maybe some small yogurt containers. If you don't bake the coffee cake I'd buy some. Dougnuts can just be big and heavy so I'd skip them.
This may also fall in the line of tacky, but what about sausage gravy and biscuits? Gravy in a crockpot and a big basket of biscuits. You could do some fancy jams, apple butter, pumpkin butter.
I'm not a dainty breakfast person though. I want FOOD.
Probably 2/3 men.
I agree with you on regular size donuts. I was thinking donut holes. I think they work better in this type of situation.

If I were serving burritos to this crowd, I would bring a selection of specialty hot sauces -- for some reason, men seem to get really into them. I like
Captain Thom's Dia de los Muertos (not too hot; delicious)
Scorned Woman (pretty hot and also tasty)
Dave's Ultimate Insanity Hottest Sauce in the Universe (might be tasty, who knows, your taste buds have been singed off)
At 10 am, most people will have had breakfast. When we do a 10 am event, the most popular items are baked goods that aren't too sweet and fresh fruit. Granted our office is 20 not 50. Last time the menu was,
Ham Biscuits
Cheese and Roasted Red Pepper Biscuits
Melon salad (watermelon, cantaloupe and honey dew drizzled with a little ginger ale served in cups)
Fruit skewers (Strawberries, Pineapple, and Red Grapes on Skewers)
Caprese Picks (CherryTomatoes, basil leaves and mozzerella on a toothpick)
Orange Juice, Tomato Juice Apple Juice
Regular Coffee and Decaf Coffee
We have a full kitchen available so we made the biscuits ahead of time, froze them for the transport and then cooked them on site. The smell of hot biscuits had everyone salivating. I used this recipe for both biscuits. http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Ham-Biscuits I substituted cheddar and finely chopped roasted red peppers for the ham and chives.
Magdala, thanks, that's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking!
About the biscuits... I could cook them on site, but I worry about the timer going off right in the middle of someone's speech. Are they really lousy at room temp? Did you buy the roasted red peppers in a jar?
And that melon salad... What's this ginger ale drizzle? Just a little soda poured over? Do you think the salad honestly has flavor that way? It sounds so simple, I'd love to make it, I just want it to have personality.

These biscuits are fine at room temperature. I will make up a batch on the weekend and use them for breakfast all week. It's just that the smell of fresh biscuits brings people in looking for something good. I have used both jarred peppers and roasted my own. The only trick is to drain the peppers really well or the biscuits get soggy.
For the ginger ale drizzle, I used Maine ginger ale (the brand is named after the state). This is a local, strong flavored ginger ale. Better ginger ale and better fruit make that salad better. It is really that simple. I tend to like simple food.
Looks like you're all set. Magdala's biscuits sound amazing!
