XP: Weight Loss questions

I apologize for intruding but I am looking for some tips/feedback. I'm trying to make sure my diet and exercise routine is beneficial.

I have been doing my wii fit since the weather turned pretty cold. I have been averaging 30 mins a day while burning about 130-140 calories a day.

I downloaded myfitnesspal and have been keeping my diet to 1530 calories a day. (when I add exercise in it ends up at about 1660/70 - the app removes the calories from my daily intake). I have also been trying to make my food consumption even throughout the day so 3 snacks and 3 smaller meals every 2-3 hours, portioning my foods, making sure to have more protein and less fat but still some healthy fats like nuts, cheese, yogurt etc .

I am 185 lbs and 5'5 tall. Do you think this is sufficient for weight loss? Did I give you enough information? I am wondering if I should increase my activity? anyone familiar with myfitnesspal?

thanks so much for the help

CJ :-)

Re: XP: Weight Loss questions

  • Theoretically it takes a 3500 calorie deficit to lose 1 lb (i.e. cutting calories and/or exercise).

Do you know how many calories on average you were eating before? If we assume you were around 2000, then cutting down to 1530 calories per day would give you 3290 deficit per week, which is where your exercise would come in.

My suggestion, stick to the 1530 calories even on days that you do light workouts. Keep your diet consistent and try to minimize the days where your calories spike higher, this will give you good habits to make a lifestyle change, vs just trying to lose weight.

In the past, for me, having more for breakfast and lunch has been more beneficial for me (i.e. protein heavy breakfast and lunch) this keeps me sustained for the majority of the day with a few light snacks in between and then I can make something light for dinner. I use the fitness pal app on my phone also, remember that it is a great guide to keeping you on track and honest about your calorie intake but it isn't exact. Keep your portions under control and as accurate as you can.

Good luck! I hope this helps.

  • That does help, thanks so much!!  I am sure I was way above 2000 a day.  I cant be sure but thinking back on it, I was eating whatever, and snacking a lot plus desserts pretty often. Not good.  I think I will just do what you say and stick with the 1500 a day and see how it goes after a few weeks. If I am dropping a few lbs then I know I am on the right track.

    thank you

  • myfitnesspal is a great app. They have a section where you can add your own recipes and it'll give you the caloric breakdown so you can add it to your day. Great for frequent homemade meals.

If you're up for it, I also recommend the 30 Day Shred. It's more intense (you use free weights, too) than the Wii Fit, but it's a great workout. If I can't get out to run, I alternate days with the Wii Fit and the 30 Day Shred for variety.

Good luck with your weight loss!

  • Hello- here some of the tips I've learned from my trainer....

If you are working out at least 3 days a week for about an hour...you should be only eating about 1200 calories a day. Meals should be about 300 ea. Break, lunch and dinner...and snacks should be about 150 ea. morning snack, afternoon snack, and maybe a 100 cal snack before bed. Workouts should be about 1 hr, 30 min cardio and 30 min free weights or machined weights...change up your workout often and rest in between each set of reps for about a minute. Cardio should be a min burst of running/jogging, followed by a min of walking...it boosts you metabolism majorly...Also drink lots of water throughout the day...Diet should consist of things like fish, chicken, rice, salads..snack could be low fat cheese sticks, veggies with hummus, p.butter, almonds, tostitos and salsa, pita bread and tuna...things like that...you should have no problems if you follow this, Remember, eat less, move more!

  • Sounds like you are doing all the right things for your diet: eating smaller, more frequent meals, increasing protein and limiting fat.  Myfitnesspal is a great app, because it increases accountability... be sure to continue to measure portions. (In my case, turns out 2 TBSP of peanut butter is not as much as I thought it was :)

What really helped me with my weight loss was a nutrition system called Isagenix.  I signed up for it after it was recommended by a trainer at my gym.  It again helps with accountability and portion control, while still letting you eat.  It is an all natural product with no stimulants or crazy chemicals.  I even convinced my husband to do it with me.  (and a bonus is that since we have been doing it, our grocery bill has been cut in half :)  Let me know if you want more info about Isagenix.

Best of luck with your weight loss... sounds like you are on the right path!

  • Are you consistently eating the same type of foods and doing the same exact exercises?

Your body can get used to a routine, try mixing it up. If you're eating chicken for every dinner, try eating fish twice a week. Try out a new vegetable etc. If you're just doing the WII fit as exercise, try adding some free weights, or taking a walk outside as cardio.

  • I use myfitness pal as well as take Advocare and am doing great. I have dropped 49 pounds since April:-)

Advocare meal replacement shakes have 24 grams protein and that's my breakfast. A meal replacement bar has 16grams of protein for lunch and a double chocolate snack bar has 10grams. It's very important to eat enough protein to keep your metabolism working. Before my light dinner I've had 575 calories and 50 grams of protein in a day all loaded with vitamis and nutrition. I never feel hungry and feel great all day.

Look at www.advocare.com/120433477 if you're interested. This really helped me jumpstart my diet and get over the plateau I was stuck on:)
