How much oil did you use last year?

Scott and I are considering renting a house....

It's a small dormered cape, 3bedroom 2 bath, probably less then 1000 sq ft. Downside it is oil heat which we were not planning on dealing with. I am trying to figure out, if your house is about the same size how much oil did you use last year? I know this is different for everyone but any insight would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!!!

Re: How much oil did you use last year?

  • My recommendation... don't do it.  If you can be in an apt with less $ in rent and you don't have to pay for heating... then it's worth it, believe me.  Save your money while you can...cause once you are in a house, you seriously become house poor...whether you rent it or not.

Our house is about twice that size... and we used a LOT of oil last winter.

  • I agree with PP.  It is not worth the $$ to rent a house if you have to pay for oil.  As my MIL says......   dont go anywhere unless heat is included.  If i remember correctly, you have electric heat now right?

I mean, unless the rent is super super low and you think that it'll break even as to what you are paying now, it just is crazy to do right now...

  • we used about 150 gallons and that is for heat and hot water.  We used to be in a complex that had electric heat and I never ever had to turn that on.  See if the owners will pay for the oil and that can be part of your rent.
  • I live in apt that has oil, which i am responsiable for.  Dont rent a house with oil because it will eat you up. My rent is cheap i am still POOR. i have gas for hotwater and cooking.

My oil tank is 250- it cost me 1k to fill it up last year ::thuds::  I paid 700 to fill it up first then once it hits a current amount i pay 300 thats it. It last me all winter only because i have a timer. so i usually put it on 4 am to 6 am then it comes back on at 8 pm to 11pm. It works out pretty good, we are never home till 730 ish so why waste the money.

i also have propane for hotwater and cooking, so thats eating me up , it is 150 gallon cost me 300 dolalrs to fill it up every 3 months.
