I just love to fill in for my coworker who can't seem to get to work on time, ever. We are supposed to be here at 8 and she must think her start time is 8:30-9 (When she does decide to show up). I thought I would list some of her most common excuses for some entertainment.
1) She has a migraine. She uses this one A LOT. She will call the boss and say that she is at home sitting in the dark trying to get her migraine to go away and that if it goes away she will come in to work. She never does.
2) Her basement is flooding. This one happens EVERY time it is raining hard. She says the way her backyard is, whenever there is heavy rain it runs into her basement and she has to stay home and move the furniture and watch the water. First of all, wouldn?t you have done something about this by now? And if it is true, ok, move the furniture- and then come to work. What good does it do to watch the water? It?s not like you can push it away. If it's coming in it's coming in.
3) The power is out. This has happened quite a few times. I live about 10-15 minutes away from her and my power has not been out any of these times. Her reasoning is that because her power is out, she can not dry her hair; therefore she can not come in to work.
4) One of her dogs got loose. This one happens quite often as well. She usually comes in eventually after using this excuse but it does give her an extra 2-3 hours off work that morning while she searches for her dog in the neighborhood.
5) She fell asleep on the couch. She will call around 10 or so and say she just woke up on the couch, she must have fallen asleep watching tv and didn?t get to set her alarm.
6) Her dogs made a mess/got in a fight. Either way, she has to come in late because she must clean up whatever the dogs did. Then she decides to just go ahead and wait out rush hour traffic and come in when it dies down.
Anyway, she?s not in today because she?s sick. Weird because she was just fine yesterday. Anyone else know someone like this and care to share some more great excuses?
Re: Coworker's excuses for coming in late
My coworker isn't so blatant about it but she does make up weird lies and theb I usually catch her in them but the boss isn't around enough to put 2 and 2 together.
This is the ongoing thing
Her husband works an overnight job, and he works 48 hrs in a row. He gets home at 730 am one day a week. On this day she has worked it out that she will come in 15-20 minutes late, because she has to "wait for him to get home and get the kids settled before she can get ready and come to work". I'm not sure why she can't take a shower with the kids. One is 7 the other is 1 1/2, I mean most other moms figure itout. Most other working moms might also find a sitter or aneighbor or family member to watch the children for 1/2 hr until dad gets home so she can go to work but she thinks becuse she has children she can use them as an excuse. She doesn't ever try to inconvience herself (ie find a sitter for that half hour or figure it out) she always inconviences the company and her collegues by coming in late.
Anyway, like 3 days a week she comes in 20 minutes late now and she always says "sorry my husband just got home". I know for a fact that he only comes home in the am ONE day a week. When the boss asks why shes late she always says it. I think she thinks shes tricking us.
Sometimes she calls out and says she is using a vacation day. She has used about 25 vacation days this year, she has like 15 in reality.
soemtimes she is late for another "flat tire", she must have nails in her driveway because I can count 5 flats she had this year.
Her baby has been sick more times than i can count, especially on nice beach days, or days her husband gets off work early. He always hasa "24 hr bug" and is fine th enext day...
And why does she have a job at all?? Your bosses should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this behavior.
I had a job a while ago that was hard labor, but it was fun. The owners step daughter, who is about my age, would end up working there because she would get fired from all her other jobs, and just beg to come in to get money. I canot tell you how many times I had to cover for her because "I forgot, I have a party to go to tonight and I can't work" or "I havent seen my bf in days, so he and I are going to go out, can you come in for me?" Someone HAD to come in, so I would do it until my H got fed up with me constantly cancelling OUR plans to let her have hers. She was a great worker when she worked and we are friends because she is a nice girl, but she really believes her social life ALWAYS trumps work.
My mom works in a physical rehab place, and the millionaire owner got his 15 year old daughter a job alongside her. I have to hear it everyday on the phone from my mom about his this girl cannot exert herself, takes weeks off to go skiing in Aspen, and also declares that she cannot work the day of or after a horse show. But.... its the owner's daughter so no one can say a word.
I used to work with someone like that. I work at a law firm, and she was the top attorney's assistant. When she was out, it was my job (as the clerk) to cover her calls. When she was actually here, it was my job to pull her files for her and help the attorney with client appointments. Literally the only thing she had to do was answer phone calls and emails all day.
She had 3 kids, and I swear one of them was sick every.single.week. I understand that kids get sick, but seriously? Her husband worked from home for pete's sake!! She didn't need to be home, too!!! She would come in whenever she felt like it. We are supposed to be at work at 8:30 and she would saunter in close to 9:00 every day. I understand being late a few times, but if you get here the same time every day, something is wrong with your schedule. Or she would tell clients they could come in and sign their paperwork with me, and then not tell me or give me the file, so they would show up and ask for me and I would look like an idiot. Or she wouldn't tell me her attorney needed a file, so obviously I woulnd't give it to him and then I would look bad and not her.. And here's the real kicker- last Easter (the day after easter) she was two hours late to work. I was running around the office trying to get some last minute things ready for the attorney's appointments when she finally decided to show up. She went to Target before work to stock up on the candy and decorations that were on sale! I was so angry!! She was a nightmare. Always on personal phone calls, and then when clients would call upset that their stuff wasn't done, she always blamed it on something else.
She quit a few months ago, because her husband got a "real" job and they had to move. But it stinks because she probably stills thinks she was an amazing worker here. I'm just glad she's gone!
These kill me! It is super annoying for everyone but the person who is late. As for why bosses put up with it, here's my thoughts:
1. The boss sucks.
2. The company won't terminate without a gazillion write-ups and the boss is tired of the paperwork.
3. The company won't terminate because of the headache it causes with unemployment.
I don't know much about unemployment and lawsuits but every company I worked for made me do a million write-ups and corrective meetings for months and still it was a struggle to be allowed to fire a bad emplloyee.
4. Hiring people sucks! I work on a government contract that is basically a sinking ship with a death date. If that's not bad enough, anybody we hire must already walk in the door with a finalized security clearance and must be certified in whatever technology the position deals with. Combine that with the fact that our company doesn't pay crap.
So if you fire someone, you have to replace them. It took us over six months to find a new System Admin and five months to replace an Application Server Admin. In the meantime, our boss had to explain on a weekly basis to the people tying his hands why he couldn't find a new person for the two open positions.
At the end of the day, we have bodies in the positions. Neither one of them are qualified, but they show up and fill in their timesheet.
One of my coworkers has to take a day off every week for some god awful stupid reasons, most of her reasons were lies and straight up bs.
1. my daughter got locked up out of town and im the only one can get her out and it 14hrs away but ill be back in time for work tomorow lol.
2.my best friend is getting a divorce and im a witness to some of the cruel things he did so if i dont show up i'll get locked up.
3.I have to move today cause my landlord already found someone to move into my apartment and i dont want my things out in the rain (liar!!! she stills has the same address)
4.I have to go to the Southern Heritage Classic this year I missed it last year!!!
the lady is way older than me and is really pathetic, I would love to take off work but only one person can be out in the same department so ill never get a day off
