How old is too old for a swing?

Thinking of grabbing one at the local consignment shop for A for Christmas.  She will be almost 4 months by then.  How much use would she get out of it?

We don't have one at home but she loves being in the swing at daycare.  Now I'm annoyed I didn't get one from the beginning, but they are so damn big and we already have so many baby containment devices.

  • I thought for sure we were done with ours at 6 months. However..

My kid takes both of his daily naps in his swing. At 1 year and 24 lbs. I don't love but this practice but it's where the babysitter puts him because we didn't do any sleep training at night and you can't drop in his crib away for nap time during the day.

So this thing has gotten a LOT of use.

  • We stopped using it when J started trying to sit up - so some time between 5 and 6 months.

Ditto JenD. D started sitting up around 4 months so I think we got rid of it around 5-6 months as well. I just got too worried that she was going to fall out of it. She's kind of a maniac like that. Not to mention that she weighed a million pounds and the swing really didn't swing her anymore.

  • Both my kids hated the swing as tiny babies.  Declan will not sit in it at this point.

Aisling wouldn't go in it really for a long time, and then last year around this time- so she was about 15 months- she suddenly because obsessed and would fall asleep at night in it while swinging and watching the same Elmo Christmas movie every.single.night.  If she wasn't too big, she'd go in it now (she has tried).

I say see what you can get for a decent price at a consignment store...or watch for big Christmas season deals maybe.

Same here.  I was so sad when we had to pack that sucker up because it was a sure fire nap spot for him but I wasn't comfortable with him being in it once he could sit up.

  • DS doesn't pull himself up to sitting yet, so we still use it. Have to strap him in carefully though, because he tries to turn himself over in it. We definitely don't use it as much as we used to, but he still naps really well in there.
