Because I'm bored: a poll!

Hey ladies (and gents!!) I am super bored and decided to start a random "what do you call it?" poll. DH and I were talking about this yesterday and it has been on my mind ever since... Apparently his family and my family couldn't be more different!

1. At the grocery store, is it a shopping cart, or a buggy?

2. What do you call soft drinks? (soda, pop, or coke)

3. Do you pronounce pecan and "pee-can" or "puh-con"?

4. What do you call your father? (pop, dad, pa, etc?)

Hmmm. I can't think of any more... feel free to add yours!!

    1. At the grocery store, is it a shopping cart, or a buggy? When I was single I called them buggies, but DH calls them carts, and I guess that has rubbed off on me.

    2. What do you call soft drinks? (soda, pop, or coke) Soda

    3. Do you pronounce pecan and "pee-can" or "puh-con"? I pronounce it both ways: when speaking of pie, I will say "puh-con pie" but when just speaking of the nuts, I will say "pee-cans."

    4. What do you call your father? (pop, dad, pa, etc?) To me, he is Dad. I always thought Pop was a name for grand-dads, until I discovered that's what DH calls FIL.

Hmmm. I can't think of any more... feel free to add yours!!

I always say "ant." And I only know one person that says "ont"!!

  • I hate the word aunt. I'm from North Carolina and lived there for 21 years, so I've always pronounced it "ant" as most southerners do... but now I live in New England where it's prounounced the other (proper) way and I just try to avoid it all costs. When I talk about my step children's aunt I say it the New England way so they don't look at me like I have 2 heads.

I call them "runners" or "running shoes" (West Coast Canada). Tennis shoes here are flat shoes like converse not ones made for running. I would understand sneakers to be running shoes but personally wouldn't use that term.
  • I noticed this one today at work. What about the word 'envelope'? I say it like INvelope but everyone else around the office seems to say ONvelope
  • 1. Shopping Cart

    2. Pop

    3. Not sure--I actively try to avoid saying it, because I don't know how.

    4. Dad

    Aunt = ant

When it comes to my athletic shoes, I'm very specific. I have my "running shoes," for actually running, and when they get old, they become my "work-out shoes."  I will also say sneakers or runners on occasion. For me, tennis shoes are what I wear to actually play tennis. They have hard soles to last on hard courts.

At first I thought I say "ENvelope" but now that I've thought about it some more, I think I say "ONvelope."

  • I'm a little behind, but I'll play!

  • That makes sense calling shoes by the specific name if you have multiple pairs or use for a specific thing. I just have a pair of sneakers. If I had multiple pairs I would definetly call them differnt names.

    ENvalope. That's a good one.

  • I call my choes by different things too. I have my running shoes, and my work-out shoes. Dh just calls his "worn out" shoes.. idk..

    I say INvalope.

And I thought of another: the colered sugar topping for ice cream. I call them sprinkles, but I've heard them called "jimmies" before, too, when I worked at an ice-cream parlor.
