Racist or just inappropriate?

So I had dinner with a couple of friends tonight. As we were walking to our cars one of my friends bumped into an old friend of hers who happened to be a police officer. The police officer was with a fellow officer. As my friend chatted with her old friend, my other friend and I chatted with the other cop. The cop ( whom is African American) mentioned that he had recently moved here from Houston, TX and that he had three daughters. He then showed us a pic of his daughters. Looking at the pics, It was very clear that his daughters were biracial. So I asked if his wife was white. The cop gets furious and calls me a racist. In hindsight, I agree that may question may have been a bit inappropriate but I'm confused as to why he grew so angry about it and saw it racially charged. The kids looked kinda white to me. Geesh! Your thoughts?

Re: Racist or just inappropriate?

  • He got pissed because it's none of your damn business. Why the eff would you ask a question like that?

This. The race of his wife and his children are no concern of yours. Examples of appropriate responses are: "They are beautiful girls!" ,"What lovely smiles!", "They look like so much fun.", or "How are they settling in after the move?" No need to mention race. It's just not necessary, or appropriate.

  • Also, whether or not you believe his daughters are biracial is irrelevant, but it's quite possible that they aren't at all. Black skin colors range in tone and shade, and it's quite possible that their mother is also black.

  • SMH that you even have to ask.
  • Woah. Definitely insensitive and inappropriate.

I drew my conclusion after looking at the girls skin tone, hair texture and features. Obviously I was spot on.

That doesn't change the fact that it was incredibly rude and inappropriate. Learn some manners.

I guess somehow you missed that I was responding to nasty Annie's comment and agreed that my behavior was inappropriate.

How were you spot on? No where did you say that the Officer said "why yes my wife is white". He just called you on your comment, that it was racially motivated. Because outside of the fact that the color of his wife's skin has NOTHING to do with the conversation at hand (or any conversation), the african skin tones, hair textures and features ARE variant. Have you NEVER EVER seen a picture of the people from Northern Africa? I know people of Egyptian (which IS in Aftrica) decent who have straight hair and caucasian facial fetures. SO yes, it is racists. Because you have no clue and because there was no reason to bring it up.

    lol..

Somehow you seem to have gotten lost during this conversation. I never asked if his children were Egyptian, Eritrean, Sudanese, or African. I asked if his wife was white. I never said their hair was "straight" at all so that is not how I derived at my conclusion. Also, FYI..there are many African Americans with naturally straight hair.. My question was how was he was considering my comment racist. To help you out here is the definition:

    Racism
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

As for your definition of Racism...you forgot to add the second part of the Meriman-Webster definition., 2: racial prejudice or discrimination Which brings me to the definition of prejudice (or to prejudge) - 1:an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. You were looking at a picture of his kids. Instead of just saying "how cute" (or nothing at all), you raised a question of their racial make-up. It is not a hard leap for anyone (other than the clueless) to read that you looked at these children and your opinion of them (be it good or bad) was based on the race of both of their parents OR it would not have mattered ONE *** WIT. Basically honey, you could only see the because of their mixed race. And that, is prejududice and a part of racism. Just accept that you were racist here and either LEARN from it or DONT. But stop trying to justify it. Because (and I am extremely anit-PC and I found you to be racist) you were mopre than inappropriate.

Perhaps you do not realize that because someone is Egyptian descent does not make them African American. My opinion was true and was not harmful.

Fyi..I typically do not converse with people that use all caps, profanity when trying to express themselves or refer to others as " honey".  It reminds of behavior that is displayed on a tv show that I happened to glance at. It was called honey boo boo.

Congratulations on being one of many people who, instead of seeing something deeper than skin color, cultivate this country's insistence to make race a big deal. Instead of seeing a beautiful child, your first instinct is to guess what her race is.

That's the thing, though. Black Americans have a variety of facial features, skin tones, and hair textures. While you think that you are correct, you have no way of knowing that. And you still behaved in a racist fashion. Good luck with that.

I agree black Americans have a variety of features etc. trust me, this I know. And After seeing him, then seeing his kids it was obvious. I don't believe it was racist, inappropriate perhaps but not racist.

I love this response.  I do.  Basically, becuase you cannot break the actual substantive argument with additional facts from your point of view, you have to look for an escape route.

The next time you use the dictionary as part of your dissertation, you might want to make sure you are using the definition correctly/fully.

And yes, noticing anything about a person based on his or her facial features is racially motivated becuase rasicm has not just one, but two meanings and exhibited the second definition (prejudice) the minute you "noticed" the features on the children and applied a "racial reason" for them.

But given your need to divert attention from the heart of this discourse becuase you can't stand the message, you probably won't be able to accept the truth about your issues with race either.  It's sad.

why do you suppose the cops feelings were hurt?

The irony in all of this is, for those that know me know that when I usually tell people my name, the first question I get is what race are you, what is your nationality, or where are you from. I am never offended.

  • Both my parents are black but I look like I'm mixed. I get asked which one of my parents is white. While I don't get offended by it, I do think the people asking are f*cking dumb and wonder why they think it's okay to automatically assume that one of my parents must be white.
    image

If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on the cat. image

  • Maybe he was offended because the assumption that his wife must be another race. He could have mixed kids without having a white wife. I know someone that calls herself bi-racial but from the outside looking in, you would never think so because both of her parents are a mix of white and black that goes back generations. I also have a friend who's mom is black and her dad is white but she refuses to be called mixed or bi-racial. She calls herself italian and portugal.

It's taking it too far to call you racist. My sister and I have the same parents, but every summer strangers would assume we were half siblings because I tan/burn like an irishman, while she can bake to a summer brown no problem. Even when they called her hispanic, we would call them ill-informed not racist.

  • Neither, I think that is a perfectly legitimate question. BUT it also depends on where you live. I'm from South Carolina and now live in South Texas and I would probably have asked the same thing. Too many people are worried about PC crap, you can't help the way you were born, black, white, whatever! People are just too sensitive, you are what you are! Its not offensive at all!
