Doggy Door for Sliding Glass Door?

I am renting a house and have two dogs - 20 pounds and 40 pounds. I would like to get a doggy door without having to cut a hole in the glass. I would also like to be able to use the sliding glass door myself. Does such a thing exist? I've looked at some and I don't want to bolt anything into the door frame since I don't own the house. And if one does exist, is it safe and sturdy? Obviously I want to keep out other animals, bugs and intruders. Is there a doggy door that will work for my situation?

Re: Doggy Door for Sliding Glass Door?

  • Didn't want you to think you were being ignored. Doggie doors aren't very popular on this board, because it's not safe for dogs to have access to the outdoors when you're not home to supervise. They could escape the yard and be killed, be stung by an insect and killed, be stolen or harmed by unscrupulous people.

The boss (I think?) of one former had a raccoon sneak in through the doggie door. Her dogs killed it, there was blood all over everything. All the furniture had to be replaced and everyone (humans included) needed to get rabies vaccines.

  • I have been looking for a sliding glass doggy door system for a bit too, without much luck.

In our situation, it'd be in our sunroom where we'd use it - it'd be supervised (We can close off the sunroom so they won't have unsupervised access)...just save me the trip of walking on the freezing cold floor to open the door/close the door. We have a large picture window that I can see the entire yard, and they are not left out unsupervised. As the PP suggested, you should not leave your dogs outside unsupervised - even in your fenced in yard.

Please update if you find anything!

  • Lowe's, Home Depot and DrsFosterSmith.com all have doggie doors for sliding glass doors.

For what it's worth, I don't see anything wrong with a dog door.  Ours is open while we are home, so the dog can go freely. We do, however, keep him locked in the house when we are not home.

  • Thanks for the tips.  I'm a sahm so the dogs are rarely unsupervised.  Our 13 year old foster seems to be needing to go out more frequently than before. I'll check out the site suggestions.

My friend recommended Champion when we wanted to install a new pet door for our new pup. I?m thinking of contacting them just to find out what kind of pet doors they have.
