Re: Poll: Holiday season at work

  • we do nothing, get nothing...so I hope I don't hear anyone complaining, it could be worse
  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? Yes, we have a lunch on a weekday in the office.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? I participate, it's fun, no SOs.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? We have holidays on Dec 24, 25, 31, and Jan 1. I'm taking off the 3 days in between plus Dec 20 and 21 for minor surgery, so I'll be out of the office Dec 20 through Jan 1.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? Ha ha, nope, I work for the state.

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? This is my first year working here, and I'm not sure if the division with whom we contract does a party during an afternoon or not. I know there's nothing after-hours. Our little team will probably do something, just the 9 of us, one afternoon.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? If the division does something, I may attend. If our team does something, I'll definitely attend. I wouldn't go to an after-work event.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? I have Christmas Eve & Day, and New Year's Eve & Day. I'm talking off the other three work days in between.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? This is my first year with my company, but as a contractor, I highly doubt it.

Also: I hate, hate, hate the "it could be worse, so you shouldn't complain" mentality. If that was the rule, no one could ever complain about anything, ever, 'cause we're not living in a war-torn country rife with poverty and genocide.

Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? Yes, my boss (of the job I'm about to leave) has a very nice party on a Friday night at her home that she invites our (small) company to, as well as some others)

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? Normally I would, and so would DH, but my last day is 4 days before the party, so I'm not attending.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? This current job gives off the 24th, 25th, and 26th, which is nice. I'm SO excited that the job I am starting on the 13th gives the entire week of christmas through jan. 2nd off.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? The first year, no. Last year, the boss gave us gift cards to local restaurants. We get them sometimes as forms of payment for advertising. It was very interesting that she clearly doled them out by how much she thought you were worth. I had been there 1.5 years and got $150 to Cantler's, a girl who had been there less time and had a "lower" job (I can't think of how to phrase it -- she didn't produce as much as me because her job didn't require it) got $50 or $75.

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? Yes, we have a huge holiday party.  They rent out a hotel ballroom, lots of food, a few free drinks per person, etc. it's usually a casino theme so betting chips are included in the ticket.    The poker chips can be turned into raffle tickets. Lots of prizes!

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? We've gone the past two years but I don't think we are going this year.  Employees are free but guests are $25.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? I'm scheduled off the 23rd and 24th but I work on Christmas.  I'm also off 30th and 31st but work New Year's Day.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? No.   We are doing a Secret Santa though!

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? We have a potluck GTG in the afternoon.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? I've attended the past two years, but won't this year, since i'm scheduled off.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? We have off the 24th-2nd.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? Not unless you are ok with it coming from your tax dollars. I work for the state.

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? We normally have a party one afternoon in our conference room. There are only 18 of us, so not a huge group.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? Yes, I attend. SO's are not invited.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? I'm off the 25th and 1st with half days on the 24th and 31st, but I will take vacation time to turn those into full days off.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? Usually. In past years it has usually been a gift card.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more?

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? We have a potluck lunch, that turns into the whole afternoon since the faculty insist on bringing wine. :)

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? Since it's during the day, I'm going. SO's are not invited.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? I have off from Dec 22-Jan 2nd.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? Nope, work for a state agency.

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? Yes, its on a saturday evening

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? I haven't for the past two years because of kids, but we are getting a sitter this year and both going. Everyone brings their spouses or SOs which is nice.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? Just christmas and new years day. I am taking off the 24th and the 26th too

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? Usually, unless we are having a bad year financially. Its been anywhere from 500 to 2500 in the past.

  • Does your office have a holiday party? During the day or on a night/weekend? Yes, it's during the day. SInce we're HR, we'll do an Agency-wide Open House breakfast in the am which will turn in to our department party in the afternoon.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? I go but more to get out of work than to be social. I'm not really close with anyone on my floor and quite frankly, lately, it blows balls. I toyed with the idea of taking off so that tells you how excited I am about it this year. SO's aren't invited

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? Generally, the State only gets Christmas Day and NYD but we have "service reduction days" built in on the eves for both. Plus I have some PL time to burn up between now and January 8th. So I imagine that I'll be taking time off but I don't have it scheduled yet.

Does your company give you a year-end bonus or gift of some kind? haha...no. We are getting a big fat 2% COLA though.

complain away, just keep poor old me in mind...I obviously hate that we have no lunch, no potluck, no decorations, no cookies, no cards, no candy canes, really, nothing, I hate it. We don't celebrate anything at all, one faculty member had a baby and that's the only time we've ever gotten lunch. Some perks and merriment would be nice.

  • I know I am very fortunate where I work, probably part of the reason I have been here for 8 years! We have a Saturday evening dinner party usually at a restaurant that the company rents out for the evening. Spouses/Significant Others are invited with free food and drink all night. All employees at the party receive a gift that night. I have only missed one party over the years. Our office is closed Dec 24, 25, 31, and Jan 1, I am not taking any other time off. My department gets together for a Secret Santa lunch, so I feel like we have alot of fun filled activities during the holiday season.

yes, different arrangements every year, but this year we are going to the managers new home and all bringing a dish and having a white elephant gift exchange.

This year its on a saturday night.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO?

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more?

Obviously... so if workplaces do any of these gestures to acknowledge celebrate the holidays it's like they're a kindergarten classroom and not a real work place. Because a lot of people here have inidicated various degrees of such acknowledgement/celebration and you're not saying that about them. Based on other people I know, and my previous workplaces...having nothing feels very different and not enjoyable for me. I know people are on the other side, they don't enjoy what their workplace does for the holidays, would rather not celebrate at work, find is corny (like my husband). Many people here sound like the appreciate what is done at their work place, which is nice to hear.

Just re-read my orginal post...I wish TN had a sarcasm font because I didn't mean the comment seriously at all, I was genuinely interested in everyone's responses and have read all of them....even if there were any complaints I would really sympthasize with that position because I know some experiences can seem disappointing. But it sounds like most people here really enjoy the holiday at their work place and I think it sounds pretty cool.

Is there are rule at your workplace AGAINST recognizing holidays or something?

If they don't sponsor/organize events, is there any reason you can bake cookies and bring them in or put up a small tree on your desk or something?  I brought in poinsettas for everyone on my team yesterday.

We have a large firm party every year (paid for by the firm) and we have a departmental lunch (also paid by the firm).  Different people bake, some people organized their own cookie exchange, a small group organized their own concert.

  • Their own concert...now that's pretty cool! In the beginning I tried organizing a lunch for the holidays, and would mention things that we used to do at my last job (like a cookoff) and was told "I wouldn't try that here" and other ways where they explained that the culture just isn't very social (not just at holidays) I put out a few decorations...I did a small wreath and snow globe but was told any more than that would be "just a bit much" and reminded that not all patients that we interact with celebrate Christmas. I have baked cookies, people eat them, and at the end of the day someone gives me back my plate. Anyways, I'm the one that shouldn't be complaining, I didn't mean to offend anyone. For one thing, I am VERY grateful that I have a job...you take the good with the bad and at the end of the day I really like the work I do and the patients I work with...I'm used to being more friendly with coworkers but I try to remind myself that I have friends and don't need my work to provide that social aspect.

Seriously, we all complain on here so please feel free to voice yours. We can be grateful for our pregnancies, jobs, DH's, whatever and still have a right to gripe once in awhile.

If so, do you attend? Do you bring your SO? I go, SOs arent invited.

Which days do you have as holidays this month? Are you taking off more? Just Christmas and New Year's Day. I'm taking off the day after christmas (and when I factor in WFH, I'll only be in the office one day in a 2 week span basically during that time frame, so that is nice!)
