So I am thinking about a quick "long weekend" type trip for DH and I to Kauai after a wedding in LA in September. We have been to Hawaii prior (Maui, Oahu and cruised the islands). DH loves to do the hiking and I am good for one day of that and then want some beach time. Can someone guide me on great things to do and places to stay?

Re: Kauai help needed
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
We hike the na pali coast as well... Got there at 8am and it was crraazzy busy, and the hike is no joke. I mean bring at least 6 bottles of water and food. The beach you hike to is choppy, so you can't swim in it, but gorgeous. We also did the additional hike to the waterfall. Overall it took us 6 hours to complete the whole thing. It was very memorable and cool, but TIRING! And we are pretty able bodied people, so if you are unsure about hiking then you probably shouldn't do it.
We also drove up to Waimea Canyon, did a helicopter tour, and tried surfing. Have fun! We loved Kauai!
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
The Kauai Marriott in Lihue is our fave resort, it's gorgeous, newly renovated and in a great location. Oh, and has a nice beach too.
I highly recommend biking the Coconut Coast in Kapa'a, beautiful scenery along the way, and some nice secluded beaches. We also loved Ke'e Beach at the very end of the road on the North Shore, make sure you go for the sunset, it's stunning, you can see the Bali Hai from there. Great snorkeling there too.
We haven't done any hiking there yet, maybe on our next trip we'll try the Na Pali Coast trail.
We were just there about a week ago! My favorite part of the island was the north shore (more lush and tropical). I found a reasonable condo in Princeville near the north shore (Hanalei Bay Resort #9123, AMZING view, nice grounds, freezing pool).
From what I could tell the best hiking was either near the north shore or all the way at the other end of the road near waimea canyon. We went a little of the way up the Nepali coast trail (not far with 3 little kids in tow) and it looked promising. I've heard it can be scary, but it is very well traveled.
Also, I'm not sure if they fly out of LA, but look into Alaska Airlines. They had the lowest price flights out of San Jose (non stop!).
We are going in Feb and spending the first part of our trip on the North Shore at the St Regis Princeville and then the other half we are going to stay in Poipu at the Kaui Cove Cottages (EXCELLENT VALUE to offset the St Regis splurge)
Did a lot of research before I booked and feeling pretty good about this!
The St. Regis is really nice, but it costs more. The Grand Hyatt is reasonable and very beautiful.
There is a nice excursion that takes you on a Clydesdale carriage ride through the Kilohana estate and ends with a romantic dinner at Gaylord?s Restaurant. If you are looking for a little romance, I would definitely splurge on this.

My DH and I have been to Kauai three times (once for our honeymoon, once for vacation, and once for our babymoon). We both love it - my DH is very active (hiking, snorkeling, swimming, etc.) where I would rather lay on a beach, and Kauai is great for both. And September is our favorite time to go!
We prefer the South Shore because it's warmer with less rain, but the North Shore is very lush and beautiful, so you really can't go wrong. We went on a Na'pali day cruise and went snorkeling off the shore, a guided day hike with kayaking and ziplining which was so fun and met a lot of couples from around the world on their honeymoons, plus lots of hiking and snorkeling on our own. We rented a condo through VRBO.com at the Kiahuna Plantation on all three visits, mostly beacuse I wanted a kitchen so I wasn't forced to eat out for all meals.
