restaurant recs in/around Phoenixville

I needs some recs near the Colonial Theatre.  Walkable and BYO would be great but not required.  MIL is not overly adventurous...so let's say upscale American or Italian.  Price is not really an issue.

Re: restaurant recs in/around Phoenixville

  • There aren't THAT many choices in walking distance.

Black Lab Bistro - American, BYOB, right across the street
Molly McGuires & PJ Ryan's both Irish Pubs
Pepperocini's - Italian, I have had several good meals there, but not BYOB
Vecchia Pizza - only have 5 pizzas on the menus, but they are all SO amazing
Iron Hill Brewery - not BYOB
Wooden Spoon - a little gem, American, not where I would take my parents, but we really like it

  • There are a few more (BYOs)

Majolica: which is fancy and amazing, but requires more of an adventurous palate.  (it is just across the street from the Theater)

Marly's: new american, great menu (a block and a half from the theater, on the main drag of Bridge Street)

Vecchia Pizza (brick oven pizza only): completely basic menu, but the place is solid. (on the same side of the street as the Colonial, at the intersection of Bridge and Gay Streets)

Just outside of the downtown, is Becca's.  It is also a BYO. I have not yet been, but we have friends who have enjoyed excellent meals. It formerly was the Twin Bays Cafe, then a server decided to buy the business and change the name.

I would avoid Black Lab and Wooden Spoon. Black Lab has declined in quality over the last few years. It had been top notch, but the owners have been "ready to sell" for a number of years, I think the quality has declined. Also, no reservations taken on Fri or Sat nights.

Wooden Spoon has incredible food, but it is definitely a 8-person cafe, not a restaurant.  They have a small menu with sandwiches and salads, along with sweets. However, the flake out factor has become a problem--you feel like you are on a set of Candid Camera.  This has happened to us, as well as others.

Also, are you coming to town this weekend?  The reason I ask is that there are two events--one pretty big (Christmas Parade, Friday), and the other HUGE (Firebird Festival, Saturday)--happening this weekend.  So, arrive early and make reservations!!

    eta: didn't see MZ's suggestion of Vecchia...duh!
Oh, and if you can try to convince her for Creole, Mexican or Thai, (I'm going to guess no) there are a few more options.

Did you see that Daddy Mim's is now in the Columbia Hotel? We walked by it last night and saw that. I don't know if it's permanent or only during the week.

I also agree with your assessment of Black Lab, we went there for the last time at Easter and I'm still annoyed with them. It was AWFUL, service wie, I have no idea about he food after 90 minutes when we had none we had to leave. They were doing scheduled seatings too, we had a reservation, first to arrive in our block, last to be sat.

Yes--I have an inside scoop on all businesses opening in the borough--they usually need to see my mister, first. Mims is now the operator of the Columbia (private parties only for now), and still has Daddy Mims open in the original location. I'm not sure if he's going to operate both, or eventually move all operations to the Columbia.  It's nice to see the Columbia back open.  Sadly, that place was run into the ground by an absentee owner/operator, and one day, they just locked the doors and didn't alert or pay the staff.

  • OOOH, I forgot one more suggestion: SIPS Bistro.  It is not BYO and has a mostly French Menu, but it has been GREAT the three times I've dined there.  Great menu  and the owner, Fabian, comes from one of Perrier's places and lives locally.
