Do you buy your boss a holiday present?

They were talking about this on the radio this morning. Do you buy your boss/immediate supervisor a holiday present?

I report to five managers, equal in status, and I can't justify buying them each a gift. I might do cards but I haven't even decided on that.

Re: Do you buy your boss a holiday present?

  • I have one boss; I normally get her some wine or liquor. No way would I give 5 bosses presents. IMO, gifts should generally go down, not up.

This is what I've always practiced. However, I feel sort of bad not giving my boss a gift since I've been with my company awhile and we're friendly. My coworker gave her something last year and I did not. But honestly she's one of those people who have everything they need and has expensive tastes.
  • I never have, and don't intend to this year, either. It's been years since I've had a boss who gave me a gift, either. I just don't think it's necessary. If I'd been with the company for 10 years and we had a relationship, then I may view it differently.

I'll be bringing in an array of baked goods for everyone on the team to share one afternoon before we all peace out for the holidays.

  • My coworkers and I go in together and get her a gift card. We are a small group, 10 total. My department head also gives us something. I normally just get a her a bottle of wine.

  • We do a white elephant gift exchange with everyone in the office (bosses included) so no, I don't give my bosses gifts separate from that.

I'm in this club too.  Buy down, not up.

You could always gift nail polish! :)  Or maybe do a tray of baked goods.

  • I used to, but since money has gotten kind of tight, other people are more important :)

  • I work for a very large partnership (and within my office alone regularly for 4 or 5 people) so gifts would be hard to do and honestly a little bit strange.  Gifts flow down, so I'll get my bonus and a few bottles of wine and will do something similar for my secretary.

  • No, I never have. She usually just gets us little Bath & Body Works travel size gift bags. We have a small office (only 5 people) so I usually just bring everyone some baked goods.
