Photo editing on Mac

I have a Macbook Pro and a Cannon 60D DSLR camera. I am not a professional or anywhere near it, just a mom that loves to take pictures. I'd like to edit them a bit and I'm looking for software to help me. I have seen light room 4 and I'm downloading the trial but I'm wondering if there is any other software you would recommend? I don't want to spend a fortune but I'm willing to pay for it of course.

Thanks!

Re: Photo editing on Mac

  • LightRoom is great for edits, but it also depends on what you want to do with them. The problem with LightRoom (or any Adobe product) is either one of two things: 1) it's super expensive or 2) you purchase it and then less than a month later they release a new version that is absurdly better than the one you just bought.

Honestly, you can edit them within iPhoto and still get really good results. If you have a Google account, you can upload photos (it's private & secure) to that and edit them within Google+. Google purchased picnik almost a year ago and incorporated their tools into it. Picnik is great-and free!

IMO, free is always better. :)

  • My photographer husband swears by lightroom. he likes the seamlessness with the other adobe products, and the fact that he can organize his photos within lightroom too.

My preference as well would be lightroom or photoshop.  they look complicated, however once you get the basic functions down, you're pretty set.  They're extremely powerful programs so you might not actually use more than 5-10 tools regularly!

  • As a photographer I also recommend Lightroom. It is so versatile and I use it for 90% of my edits. The biggest advantage of LR over iPhoto is that it uses non-destructive edits and does not create a copy of your photo. iPhoto has one version for the original and one for the edited file which leads to a lot more storage than is needed. In LR you just tweak whatever sliders you want and they are applied on export. You can actually get a pretty good deal on Amazon on LR4. And if you are somehow affiliated with a university or college or something educational, you could get the educational version which is the same functionality but a lot cheaper.
