How to decorate around an oak wood waterbed frame and headboard

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to decorate/renovate an early 1980's Wooden Waterbed Frame with Headboard that has shelves and a mirror? The bed itself is comfortable, and the frame is very sturdy, but the oak wood and headboard with mirror are not very good looking.  I would like to avoid buying a brand new frame and headboard.

  • Could you try staining it a darker color?

  • Primer and paint.

    Sawzall.

  • Home depot sells a product called furniture transitions.  We just used it to refinish an oak chest to espresso. They offer loads of colors.  Total cost for all supplies was I think around $80. The kit itself was about half that cost.

You may find cheaper alternatives but this kit provides everything (minus a few odds and ends but it has a checklist so you only make ONE trip to the store).

I am thrilled with the results. Dh and I sat through a free how-to class at home depot which was well worth the time.

  • I'd have to see a picture, but to me, it seems like you could put some rustic looking decorations around them, would probably fit in well. Consider damask or fleur de lis decorations; they would probably look pretty good.
