Newt: We Can't Beat Hillary

Did you guys see Meet the Press this morning? Newt Gingrich basically said that if Hillary decided to run, there was no way the Republicans could beat her. Here's a right up:

Newt Gingrich: If Hillary Clinton Runs In 2016, Republicans 'Incapable Of Competing'

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/09/newt-gingrich-hillary-clinton-2016_n_2267256.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regularly brushes off the idea of a 2016 presidential bid. But if she were to run, at least one prominent Republican thinks his party would be completely outmatched.

"The Republican party is incapable of competing at that level," Gingrich said during an appearance on NBC's "Meet The Press."

"First of all, she's very formidable as a person," he said. "She's a very competent person. She's married to the most popular Democrat in the country; they both think [it] would be good for her to be president. It makes it virtually impossible to stop her for the nomination."

In addition to having Bill Clinton's support, Hillary Clinton would also have the backing of President Barack Obama, who will still be a "relatively popular president," Gingrich added. "Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl."

Most people agree with Gingrich's assessment. A recent Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of people would support Clinton as a 2016 presidential candidate.

WDYT, P&CE? Will Hillary run? If she does, will she win?

Re: Newt: We Can't Beat Hillary

  • I don't know if she will run or not, but if she does I believe she will win.  obviously she will get the woman vote.  I just told this to DH the other night.

  • I hope she runs!  Maybe we can finally get some balls in the white house.

  • I think that people give Hillary too much credit in the general election.  It's true that the base loves her, but a big part of the general election is pulling in people who don't consider themselves part of the base. Dems already have a lead in women so it's not like the female vote is going to be the deal breaker.  Additionally, there's the huge unknown variable of how the GOP is going to revise its strategy and who they'll nominate.

I think she's got a good shot.  But in a two-party system pretty much any Republican or Democratic candidate has a good shot.

(FTR, I love her and would vote for her in a heartbeat, I just don't think Dems should get too comfortable - our political system isn't cut and dry).

  • She will be 69 come 2016, so I think her remaining in good health would be a big factor for consideration. You don't run with 4 years in mind, you run with 8, so we'd potentially be talking president 'til the age of 77. I think only Reagan has thus far assumed office at that age?

Obviously McCain was older in 2008, but that was a big strike against him (not least considering his VP choice). If she did choose to run, it would be very important to have an outstanding VP candidate, just in case.

I'm sure if she did run, the GOP would be digging through its binders full of women for ideas. Stick out tongue

  • I don't think she will run.  And I never believe a word Newt says.  I just feel like he is playing some political game.  Like, he really thinks Hillary could be beat, so he says she can't, thinking the stupid Dems will want her to be the nominee because of his sage advice.

That being said, I LOVE her and do wish she would run.  But I don't know that I believe that Newt really thinks she can't be beat.

  • I bet 69 year old Hillary would be in a lot better shape than your average male presidential candidate. I'm not saying I think she'll run; I have no idea. But I wish she would.

I saw this and I took it to mean that the Republican party in it current state couldn't beat her...not that she would win non matter what.

  • She's the same age as my mom which is why to me she doesn't seem too old to run. I feel like my mom would kick ass and take names if she was in the White House which is why I think Hillary would be fine (provided she has no serious health issues).
