Tax deductiable gift question
When you give someone a gift of donation in honor of do you give them the tax deduction or do you use it?
Re: Tax deductiable gift question
I don't think you can "gift" a tax deduction. Any time I've made donations to places to honor someone, i.e., St. Jude, Habitat, etc., the receipt is written out to me, since I am the source of payment. I have used this receipt for my tax returns with no issues. The person you are honoring usually gets a letter from the charity that says:
Dear friend of letranger,
letranger made a $1 million gift on your behalf to honor your [birthday/wedding/life event] to our charity. We will use this gift to pay for...research, capital costs, finding a cure for... Thank you.
Sincerely,
Charity
