Doesn't really go with this thread but I didn't know where else to post this. My husband and I are getting our first apartment and I'm trying to come up with a list of things we will need but I'm drawing a blank! We are supposed to move in Jan. 12, so we have time to get things ( We're planning to shop after Christmas if I can get him to go. He hates shopping, but thinks anything I get will be to girly) The problem is I cannot think of anything we need. It's so overwhelming. Please help?
Re: Apartment help?
I can give you a few stories of when DH got married and spent the first night together in our new home:
1. I was being a good little wifey and making dinner. (We didn't really eat at the wedding). I made a cassarole, put it in the oven, and when the timer went off, we realized we didn't have anything to pull it out of the oven with!! No pot-holders, not even any towels! DH burned his hands because he had to bunch up a bunch of paper towels to get a good hold on it. And dinner was burned. Moral of the story: make sure you have SOMETHING to pull out pans from the oven.
2. After that fiasco, we went straight to the store to get pot-holders and towels (and something else to eat). Well when we got around to taking a shower, we realized we didn't even have a shower curtain!!! So instead of going back to the store to buy one, we made a huge mess in our bathroom.. water got everywhere! Make sure you have a shower curtain.
Granted, most people already have those things, but we were both living with our parents when we got married, so we didn't have all the things we needed (obviously) and those are things we didn't think to register for.
I would recommend a google search for "new apartment items" or "first home item" lists. There are a TON out there. Also a "new kitchen" list for you to stock up on groceries and essentials.
does hubby do any online shopping? We found it nice to go through Amazon and pick out items that way....without having to go out shopping, and being able to pick out our own colors/decor/etc. We did it for our wedding registry and have just been adding to it since then (so friends and family can purchase items for holidays too).
a quick search led to this: http://www.squawkfox.com/2008/09/04/printable-first-apartment-essentials-checklist/
i'd suggest finding at least 5 other checklists and comparing them in case one list misses an item or has a good idea.
good luck!

I would start by making a list for each room for essentials. You'll collect things as you go, but there are things you'll need right away.
Kitchen- pots/pans, cutting board, silverware, plates/bowls, glassware, coffee maker, towels and pot holders (as pp mentioned), coffee cups....
Bedroom- sheets, blankets, alarm clock, bed....
bathroom- shower curtain, bath mat, towels, soap...
You get the idea. Obviously, you'll need to furnish the place as well. Don't forget cleaning supplies (paper towels, sprays, sponges, etc), a vacuum, and toilet paper!
Good luck!
