New House, aweful carpet! Need ideas for renovation

My husband and I just moved into a rental house and have full permission to paint, decorate, etc. all without making any major renovations (read: no knocking down walls). Overall the house is neutral and I have a ton of ideas for the guest room, nursery, living room and 2nd bathroom, but there are three things giving me major reno-creativity block and any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.... 1. The bedrooms all have deep green carpet and I'd rather not deal with ripping it up and replacing it right now (maybe in a year) and I'm not a huge fan of rugs. The carpet is in decent shape and is plush but I already know I will be putting a rug in the baby's room... 2. The master bedroom and bath are open to each other, there is not a doorway leading to the bath it's just open and the bedroom carpet extends into the bathroom. My husband really likes it open but I'm not a huge fan. I'm thinking maybe a partial partition or some sort of curtain to separate the spaces without completely closing the bathroom off... 3. The kitchen walls and floors are neutral but the countertop is a purple-ish cheap counter and it is edged in green tile, the same dark green as the carpets..... As far as our taste goes, we are big fans of light walls and classic design. My husband leans more toward craftsman and american styles and I love rich and sumptuous pieces that echo victorian designs... both of us love antiques and have collected a lot of heirloom and antique furniture. Decor-wise, I tend to lean towards bold graphic prints, wooden pieces of art and luxurious fabric accents... Thank you in advance! I know there are some SUPER creative people on these boards!!

  • re: the ugly counter tops. I recently saw tinting for countertops. I have no idea how it works, or its quality/ durability. It was at Home Depot. But it might be a starting place to go neutral on the counters and work in the green tiles.
  • Thanks this is definitely something I will look into!!
  • Are you plan on staying here long term? If it were me I would not put a lot of money in a property I was renting unless I really thought I was staying for awhile (probably more than 5 years).

not too much you can do about carpet other than change it out. For the bathroom you could get a curtain rod or a tension rod and hang a curtain. We did that with a closet and actually used a shower curtain, but it looked great. I know home improvement stores carry countertop resurface kits, but I have no experience with this.

  • I'm a HUGE fan of pinterest and found this on their site! I hear it works amazingly...I've copied this right from my pinterest diy board. I've added the link to my pinterest board for you. Good luck :)

Paint it! Thomas' Liquid Stainless Steel can be used on appliances, faucets and countertops. The water-based resin is stainless steel in liquid form, and it provides a brushed-stainless look that is as durable as an automotive-grade finish

And for the bathroom...Our master bath was opened to our room without doors as well, I hung up decorative shower curtains. It kept the heat in the bathroom while showering/bathing and was cute on the bedroom side. I just used decorative curtain hooks to hold them back when the bathroom wasn't in use.
