who thinks we will go off the cliff?

The more and more I read about it, the more I'm convinced we will go over. everyone is really sticking to their guns and apparently Boehner told all house republicans to plan on staying over xmas if there was no agreement reached

Re: who thinks we will go off the cliff?

  • Probably. It's sickening that the government doesn't take responsibility. They need to cut, cut, cut and stop the spending!

That's actually what the fiscal cliff will do - cut a ton of spending from the budget and put us on track to reduce the deficit to less than 1% of GDP by 2018.

So why is going over the cliff such a bad thing?

Just my two cents- I get that the cliff will help the economy as a whole in the long run, but why can't our elected officials come to an agreement? They were elected to help our country, not watch it fall apart. They have the power to actually help/fix our problems, yet they do nothing.

good point.  i myself was starting to think its not such a bad thing, maybe its what we need.  I also read if we do go into a 2nd recession, it would only be for about 6 months.

  • I say fall right over.

And second recession?  I don't think we really recovered from the first one.

no, its been a very slow recovery imo.  the 2nd recession would not be as bad as the one in 2008.  I was talking to DH about all this a couple nights ago.  We are both self employed BUT he is the main provider.  The year we were dating (2008) he booked so many weddings (photographer), he made $95,000 that year before all the deductions.  Every year since the wedding business has really sucked, no one spends the money they use to.  So he is now re-doing his pricing and going to be starting a promotion in Jan in hopes that brides won't be able to pass up what he is offering.  His promotion I've never heard of and think it will really work.  He's at the point where he has finally realized that the economy is just not the same and may never be the same as it was back in that time.

I move we second that motion.

Tell the truth: where do we see any improvements?

I still see many building projects that are still proceeding at a snail's pace. If the economy was back and the recession was over, you'd have seen those projects finished and done months ago.

There are still way too many people out of work. Remember the U6 number: we have 16% unemployment, not the reported 7+%.
  • I honestly think it's political theater with politicians posturing with time in order to increase the likelihood that their positions will be accepted. Many of them face re-elections in the near term, so likelihood of them keeping their jobs are higher if they appear effective.  Cunning little foxes..
  • Well, at this point it looks like the Republican Hard-liners are getting their way. Boehner has no real power to make a deal.

I'm still thinking there may be an 11th hour deal to kick the can down the road for 3, 6 or 12 months. When the new congress is sworn in it might be slightly more friendly to compromise, since the Democrats will have 8 additional seats in the house and a few hard line Republicans from purple districts are gone.

Ultimately, it's hard to imagine the Republican's Corporate Puppet Masters not forcing them to make a deal that protects the economy, even if taxes do have to go up a little for rich guys.

Looks like I was mostly right. The can was kicked on austerity, and the Democrats got the extension of the lower and middle class tax cuts but the rich will pay more. The deal actually was more significant than I expected.
