I was half asleep this morning and it dawned on me, John is Darius from book 1! That's why he faints when he sees Beth, has the warrior mark, and his bloodline is spot on for D. I would say he became John when John got attacked a year ago, but he said hes had the warrior mark from birth...

And also didn't the scribe virgin tell Darius he wouldn't be able to talk when she sent him back?

I've always thought this but a couple things have made me doubt myself.  I keep waiting for it to be spelled out for me.
