HELP! What would you do?

have been offered a new job. I need help deciding. Please tell me which you would pick? I posted on 9-5 but would like more answers!

Current position: I make 34,000 as an assistant for human resources. I get very bored during work. I ask to help out but the fact is our office is overcrowded. We currently are doing budget cuts and about 15 people have lost their jobs. We have around 350 employees. I'm afraid my job may be up to be cut because there's not enough work for all of us but I have been told our department is okay for 2013.

Advancement is scarce because everyone that works there usually retires from there with twenty plus years. I am the newest employee and everyone has been there no more than 10 years.

Benefits: 3 weeks paid vacation per year, 9 days of sick per year, an initial deposit of 30 extended medical days after your first year of employment, unlimited personal time(must be used with care), insurance is free for entire family, 401k with 6% matching plus a retirement plan with 2% contribution if you have worked there 0 to 5 years. We have a gym that is free and a cafeteria.

I work about 30 miles from home

The new job pays 42,000 per year and I would be an on boarding training specialist and I would handle their payroll and human resources. They are a small software company with about ten employees. The company Is two hours from where I live but I would be working from home. I would have a home office with Internet and phone. I would also receive a company cell phone.

I would also be traveling. Not more than two hours away to train others. Maybe two to three times a week. I would be paid 55 cents per mile for mileage.

Benefits: paid company cell to use for personal use, 8000,00 more a year, free health insurance for entire family, 401k with 3% matching, 3 weeks vacation, 5 sick days per year, more flexibility for working at home, not a strict environment, room for advancement, higher title.

We plan on moving to the city where the company is located soon. We have wanted to move there for a while so already havin a job there would be awesome. I would then work out of the office there. We just have a house to sale and my husband needs to find a job.

Which would you pick and why? Any help would be fantastic!

Update: my current company told me they had an offer for me. I spoke with them today and they said there are more projects they want me to work on but can't offer me more money. So basically more work but no more money.

I am having a hard time because I am scared to work from home and travel but this is a great opportunity. I am also scared because I wanted to work for the current company for a long time, only this position is not the position I wanted but I got my foot in the door. I just don't know if I should bail out now or go to a company where I can have the position I want with the pay and benefits.

I was assured today that my position would not be cut.

Thanks

Re: HELP! What would you do?

  • I would look for the job where I have the most potential.

New job sounds like better money, better position (step forward in your career), and if you can work remotely until you move, what do you have to lose. Always look to the future; leaving a job you are comfortable in is tough, but that doesn't mean its a bad idea.

Plus, in this economy, no one's job is "assured" so even if they don't plan on cutting your position today, it doesn't mean they need you in a month. Just a thought.

  • The new job sounds like better money, benefits and working environment. If you don't mind traveling 3 times a week then it might be a good fit.

The current job I am not for more work and same pay. If you want me to take on more projects I would like to take home more money.

  • The new job.

Its better all the way around, what exactly are you really afraid of here? It seems like a no brainer to me.

  • I'd take the new job in a heartbeat.  Sounds like you're not thrilled with what you're doing and this has more career potential, fits in with your plans to move and pays better.  No brainer.

  • I would choose the new job. It is scary starting over in a new company, I know. Also, chaning from working for a very large company to working for a very small company is going to have it's challenges but I think you will be happier with the oppotunity to advance and not have to worry about being cut next year. Also, the new job would pay you more money with about the same benefits as your current job.

Definitely take the leap to the new job, in my opinion. ;)

  • Take the new job.  It's in a city you want, with a salary you want, with security you want, etc.
  • If it were me, I'd take the new job..Given that your current company is struggling with layoffs (even if they assured you you are safe for one year), plus more pay and similar benefits, I'd take the new job. If the current job offered you a promotion (I'm assuming the position you originally wanted is higher) then it'd be a different story. More work for no more pay in the near future doesn't seem like a good sign of where the company is headed..it seems like they may just be laying off more people in the coming year..What does your husband think?

Also, when do you need to decide by?

  • New job!

Lots of pros! Congrats on both job offers!

  • The new job... hands down.
Waiting for the day: August 18, 2017
  • I am going to be honest you are never really "assured" your job. The new job sounds like a great benefit and a giant growth for your career. Not to mention, if you and your significant other have been planning to move to this city; isn't this kind of the flashing neon sign you've been waiting for?! New things are always scary because they are a change, but our lives are evolving and it doesn't sound like the current job offers much of a benefit for you.

As for feeling that you're bailing out on your company, like I said your job is not "assured." If they wanted to fire you, they would give you a moments notice. At the end of the day a company is a business, and if you don't have a lot of work to do you are an unneeded expense. Which means that your job is going to become obsolete maybe not this year but probably next. Jumping ship and moving on seems like a great option for you.
