What's the best way to SAY GOODBYE?
So here is my situation.....I took a school year preschool teaching position and I feel the company is not the right "fit" for me. The people are great to work with but I see no professional advancement oppourtunities.....Flash back to last January when I went to visit another center and fell in love with the place...but they were not hiring at the time. Once I accepted this current job the place I loved called me and offered me a job...but I had to decline because I already had accepted a position at the other place. I accepted this job "blindly" so to speak because I never visited the job to see the program in action and realized after I started that our philosophy was not the same and not up to my standards of professionalism. Since then I have been praying for another oppourtunity to be offered a job at the "preferred choice" Out of the blue I had a "hunch" to check the job posting sites and I saw an immediate need for a teacher at the place I have been praying about....so I called and long story short the director offered me the position and I accepted for several reasons!!! 1) this company better fits my professional philosophy of teaching 2) room for professional growth 3) better pay/hours 4) Current place has talked several times about the possibility of the program not lasting another year so there is a lack of job security..........NOW COMES THE HARD PART........HOW DO I SAY GOODBYE WITHOUT OFFENDING THE CURRENT COMPANY? what words of advice do you have for me to word my resignation? I feel bad that I will be leaving mid year and not fulfilling my commitment for the school year but at the same time I have to do whats best for my family and I feel like this is my second chance at the job I really want and have been praying on. The new job wanted me to start as soon as christmas break is over...but I told her I have to give the current job a 2 week notice which she respected so I am looking at starting mid January....I cannot remember if I signed a commitment contract or not for the school year but I vaguely remember it being mentioned that the job was a 1 year commitment....in my mind I am thinking...what's the worst they can do to me though? I am leaving for the financial benefit and well being for my family...surely they can understand that??? Please offer your thoughts and wording advice!
Re: What's the best way to SAY GOODBYE?
I can't comment about the education specific side of this question. As far as giving notice, just be honest. You have enjoyed your time, you love the people and you are thankful you got the opportunity to work there. A position you interviewed for before you even worked there opened and you can't let this slip by again. You feel bad about leaving but you have to do what's right for the family.
You can also try to give a longer notice if possible. That is always helpful.
If you insist on resigning, leave a month's notice and a resignation letter: "Dear Mr. Smith: effective January 2, 2013 I am tendering my resignation. My last day of work will be February2, 2013. I have attained a position at another company. Thank you for the experience that your company has given me. Sincerely yours, Summerjoy578."
That's all you need to say.
