Debate: Repealing the 2nd Amendment
If this topic were to be presented as a plausible option, would you support repealing the 2nd amendment. Just want to survey the board.
Re: Debate: Repealing the 2nd Amendment
I think there is plenty wrong with the 2nd Amendment. It's a relic of a bygone era that has been twisted to suit the reality of the 20th and 21st centuries. Something meant to ensure that the people of the new country couldn't be caught off-guard by the British and French in the north and west, not to mention the native inhabitants; but that probably didn't envision that "arms," in another 200 years, would include incredibly effective, semi-automatic, hand-held and easily concealed devices that would do more damage in back alleys of inner cities than against any foreign aggressors.
Having said that- no, I wouldn't support repealing the 2nd Amendment. The time for the country to reevaluate the firearm situation was before the technology superseded the practicality. At this point, we're dug in too far for hope of return. There are almost as many guns out there as people in this country. Trying to repeal the 2nd would cause an incredibly deep rift politically... maybe even culturally/regionally to a point. We're divided enough as is; I don't want the last irreparable split to be over our fetishized love for deadly weapons because I do believe that there are people out there who are so attached and so paranoid that they would be willing and eager to fight to keep that right. A small minority, to be sure, but enough.
I do like the idea of living in a country where guns and ammo are heavily controlled and primarily for hunting and sporting use. I just can't realistically ever expect that to be here, in this country.
Why do you want to survey the board? Is Canada going to invade us?
Not really necessary.
As worded, the 2nd Amendment is pretty darn vague. I imagine like a lot of the Constitution, this was on purpose to appease differing factions. Politics wasn't as divided back then as it is now, but there definitely was a serious Big Fed vs. Little Fed battle even back when the Bill of Rights were ratified.
We have pretty solid legal precedent that congress and the states can regulate the sale and possession of firearms. Gun Control is a legislative issue, not a judicial/constitutional one, at least currently.
