DH wants to get rid of our cat

Our cat is 5 years old. All of a sudden today she came running down our stairs and his behind the couch. When I went to see her she started growling and hissing. I left her alone for a few minutes. Started talking to her same thing. Then my husband comes down stairs. Pissed that she is growling and yelling at me to do something. So I get her to the basement an move her food water and litter box down there.

Now DH wants to get rid of her. She has acted like this before when we have moved to a new place. He is afraid she will bite our daughter. But she never has. I don't want to get rid of her. :( I don't know any family or friends that will take her. I don't want to take her to the human society because I'm pretty sure what that outcome will be. What would you do? FYI I work nights and work to tonight and tomorrow. Not sure if the vet is open on New Year's Eve day. DH is demanding we get rid of her...

Re: DH wants to get rid of our cat

  • We'd have serious problems in our house if DH just demanded that we get rid of animals

  • You say she has acted like this when you moved. So what has changed recently that could of up set her? Is your baby new? Just started crawling or walking a lot? Maybe she's sick/ hurt and this is how she's showing it.

If things get bad take her to any vet if yours isn't open. There is no reason to just discard a pet because of what you said.

  • Sounds like anxiety.  Try something like a DAP diffuser or feliway?  I would also consider a vet visit to rule out medical problems that are making her feel unwell and cranky

    Ditto.

When I fostered a cat (my cat HATES cats) Feliway was my best friend.

They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
  • If the cat is having anxiety, moving her litterbox and food to another area will just make it worse.  Cats like things to be the same.  I hope you will get her to a vet soon.  Your husband needs to be more patient with you and with your cat.

  • If she gets like this every time you move to a new place, try to make her as comfortable as possible. She may be nervous being in a place that she isn't familiar with. If this is not the case, then I'd suggest taking her to the vet to see if she could possibly be hurt or something. I would be very upset if my husband just demanded that we get rid of our cat.
