My hair bleeds red!

So... my sister was home from Germany with the military in November, and decided that she wanted to dye my hair! She knows I will let her do almost anything to my hair... but we're not doing this one again! She dyed my hair, already naturally red, to a not so natural shade of maroon/red. Its been almost 2 months since we've done this! Why is the red still running out of my hair!!

Any advice to stop the running or how to get it out with out going to the salon would be great! My husband had his bank account hacked, and was just in a car accident, but is doing good, so the cheaper the better! But any advice would be great, my mom suggested vinegar, and it didn't work...

  • Eventually it will wash out.

  • Been there! I used to be a bottle-red head for quite awhile, and am actually considering going back.

First of all, red is a hard color to keep looking nice. They will all bleed/fade very quickly, but some more than others. I had one that bled for days after I dyed it and then was hardly red at all after that. Then I've had others that would just bleed with the first and maybe second washes and then would be fine.

My best suggestion is to get a natural shampoo. NOT a shampoo designed for dyed hair...not even one for red hair specifically. They have too many chemicals in them still, and even though they're designed for your needs, they will still ruin the color. I buy my shampoos at Lush - if you have one near you go there NOW, otherwise their website (I think it's lush.com, in the states) will suffice. I use their solid shampoos (and it's the only shampoo I've ever used with my red hair that didn't cause any bleeding in the shower). My personal favorite is called New. It makes your hair healthier, and because it's all natural, it doesn't do any weird things to the color. Any of their solid shampoos will work well though.

The price may be a little more than what you spend on a liquid shampoo at the drug store, but the solid shampoos last WAY longer, so it ultimately works out to be a lot more wallet friendly.

That said, you should wash your hair less often too. Pick up a dry shampoo (I use a spray) and use that on the days in between washes. I usually wash my hair one day, use dry shampoo (and probably wear my hair up) the next day, and then wash it the day after that.

    Good luck!

EDIT: Oh, one more thing. Red fades quicker than most dyed colors do, no matter how you take care of your hair. This is natural and will happen no matter what, so don't worry about that. The bleeding you can change, but fading you cannot. Also, maybe use a different brand of dye next time too. They all work differently with different types of hair.

  • Thank you for the advice! My sister got me an organic shampoo, but I dont like it very much, it makes my hair oily. And I shampoo my hair 2 times a week because its curly, and if I do it more it frizzes... but I will see what I can find at lush, I dont know of one around me, but I did use them when I was in college because they were in the mall, and I bought lots when they were on sale. plus I've only ever highlighted my hair before, so solid and darker colors are new to me.
  • I really hope my advice works! I've gone through several shades of red, from just slightly redder than ginger, to a bright bold red (that one bled the most). The solid shampoo is what worked best for me, by far. I'm using a liquid right now, because I haven't dyed my hair in awhile, but I have some solid on stand by for the next time!
