Ugh.. Dog in Heat

I have a 10yr old neutered Jack Russel. But my sister recently asked if I could watch her (NON spayed) 2 yr old pug for about a month for her. She got here at Christmas, and, is now in heat. I know this because I've done some research and she's got all the "symptoms". Anyways, my Jack Russel is going nuts. She's been here about a week now but just in the last 3 days he is non stop mounting her and trying to mate with her. I keep looking it up online about how long the whole heat cycle lasts, but how long is my dog going to keep trying to get with her? It's driving me nuts. I've only been up an hour and he's jumped on her now about 20+ times. He's doing it as I type this!!!! I have to keep getting them to stop and then I just feel bad getting them in trouble, lol.

Sorry to complain, but if I wanted a second dog I'd have a second dog. I was somewhat pressured/guilted in to watching her for a month. I love her but I don't want 2 dogs! Especially when they're constantly on each other. I have her until Feb 1st!!! Is this going to continue until then?? Ugh!!!

Re: Ugh.. Dog in Heat

  • Sorry, that really sucks!  One of my dogs went into heat about 5 days before she was scheduled to be spayed, so we had to wait an extra month after her heat to spay her.  I know it varies from dog to dog, but it can last anywhere from a week or up to a month.  There are different parts to the cycle too... this may be a little TMI, but might be able to help you figure out where she is in the cycle and how much longer it will be.

Proestrus: vaginal discharge, males attracted to females, females unwilling to mate. Length: 4-20 days.
Estrus: swollen vulva, yellowish vaginal discharge, mating occurs during this phase. Length: 5-13 days.

I feel so sorry for your poor boy.  It really isn't fair to him.  Even separating him won't help - he'll still probably go crazy.  We could hear dogs barking in the neighborhood when my girl was in heat.

  • Thanks for your reply! They definitely have their quiet times where they aren't jumping on each other thankfully. I've looked up these stages too, and I'm not positive what stage she is in, but she seemed to fight back the first day or two and today seems more "willing" I guess you could say. (Sorry if this is TMI) but her vulva is definitely swollen but she still has discharge as well. I just hope this doesn't go on for the next month. Hopefully it'll just be a week or so. I feel bad for my dog too!!!
  • average 12-20 days could be shorter or longer all depends on the dog and breed.  Your JRT might continue, can you separate them?  Plus if she is bleeding a lot they do make doggy diapers you could put on her.

Also you should really talk to your sister about getting her spayed usually a month after the cycle ends that way everything will not be so inflammened inside, surgery is more complicated and serious if you do not wait, I have seen some complications if you do not wait the month.  Health wise so should be spayed I have seen many owners not spay or neuter and when they get older they get mammary cancer in females and prostate cancer in males.

I am not lecturing you I know this is not your dog and maybe she is going to spay.  :) Good luck!!!  I woud however keep them apart from each other.
