Lab Throwing up food

Hello, I have a 2 1/2 year old lab who is throwing up undigested food a lot lately. His background is he is allergic to food with corn in it so he is on a special diet, he isn't allowed any treats or anything else that might have corn in it either.

Lately as in the last month or so he throws up a few hours after eating its been happening every few days, I googled it and thought maybe he was just eating too fast so we started feeding him smaller meals 3 times a day instead 2 larger ones, but he still throws up. He does not act sick or anything and right after throwing up he is hungry again.

Has anyone had a dog that did something like this? I don't know what else to do to help him.

Re: Lab Throwing up food

  • I want to preface my comments with the fact that our dog who had a similar problem ended up having a very rare problem so I don't want to alarm you because there may be a more simple solution to you dogs problem then what happend to our poor girl.

We had a similar problem with our 3 year old (at the time) lab/German Shepard mix. She was throwing up undigested food 4-6 hours after eating. It took us forever to convince the vet that there was something wrong. We tried smaller meals, smashing up and watering her food, several special diets, many medications etc. She was finally diagnosed with a tumor in her small intestine that prevented food from moving on through her digestive system. It was removed and she is amazing now. The main difference from your post and or dog was that I don't think she was hungry after, although it was usually the middle of the night so I am not sure we would have known.

I want to add I feel for you, I got so tired of cleaning up dog puke, and feeling bad because I didn't know what to for her. I hope you can find a solution and that it doesn't involve anything like major surgery.

  • Hello,

I am a vet tech but will give my opinion but do not think that it is the correct diagnosis for your pet since I have never seen your pet and as a tech I cant diagnose.

You probably should have a vet look at your pet.  Could he have eaten something, that is a flag for me that he might have some kind of an obstruction, he is a young lab and they do like to eat things.  They might want to do xray or barrium series to rule out an obstruction and possibly bloodwork to make sure liver and renal functions are good.

This would be my first step is to contact your vet, could be something completely different but I would not take a chance.

This exactly. There are so many variables w/ a vomiting dog.
