What type of doctor do I need?

After dealing with the pain for oh, about a year, I finally have decided that I need to get my shoulder looked at.  I have tingling/numbness in my right shoulder blade.  If DH pushes on it with all his man strength, I feel relief.  I don't think a normal human being would want their spouse to basically abuse/manipulate their shoulder blade the way that I do but it feels so good.  Clearly, not a good sign.  I believe there's a nerve issue there and I went to a neurologist a few years ago who did some basic "can you feel this?" touches exercises with a pin and hammer reflex thingy.  He recommended chiro care which was great, but I think in the long run, it's something more.  Plus, I'm not droping a copay 4 times a week to go to the chiro (because that's the regiment he had me on).

So...anyone out there with medical knowledge, advise me where you think I should start.  Neurologist or Orthopedist? Bonus for recs in the Perry Hall area or at Mercy, UMD or Hopkins (downtown).

Re: What type of doctor do I need?

  • sounds like you have some cervical impingement going on I would start at an ortho get worked up with MRI , x ray etc then they will most likely talk PT for a bit  . Then move on to  neurology if they cannot find an orthopedic cause .

You may be exacerbating it at work with repetitive movements - most likely stemming from your neck.I

IE how you sit at your desk , hold your phone etc . Make sure once every few hours to stretch , use a headset  phone , and make  sure your workspace is ergonomic - ie feet on floor , adjustable chair

Good luck , I only have AA cty recs :( . I would feel pretty confident with any JHH ortho

  • Duh!  I should have asked you from the beginning!  Thanks!
