Help!! I have no style

My husband and I moved into our first house 2 weeks before our wedding almost two years ago.  The house was move-in ready and we love the way the majority of the rooms look, regarding paint color, fixtures, etc... but my living room is bland and boring and I have no idea what to do with it.  I've realized it's because I have no idea what my decorating style is.  I've looked at a thousand magazines and sites online to get decor ideas, but feel overwhelmed.  Anyone know of any good online sites with quizzes so I can find out what my style is...or websites that will help me virtually plan/design my living room.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Help!! I have no style

  • Are you on Pinterest?  Create a board just for this of living rooms you like.  You'll begin to notice that all the rooms you pin look similar.  After that, just copy the elements!
  • Pinterest is a great tool- and I look at the pictures and ideas on there all the time.  I think my problem is that I like so many things across the board and am not sure how to classify it and how to fit all my likes together to make a room that flows togethr and looks as if it matches.

I was hoping there was a site that would allow me to design my living room layout and try different placement of furniture in it and play around with design ideas.

  • Style and furniture placement are two very different things, and it's putting the cart before the horse.  It doesn't matter how to arrange things when you don't know what you want.

Pinterest works when you have very narrow boards.  Post your Pinterest - it's easy for me to analyze - I'm an old hat at it ;)

And here, it sounds like you might be able to benefit from this book.  It's for complete beginners.

  • Here is a link to a simple quiz. Once you figure out what style you like best you can go to houzz.com and look at pics on there.

  • I'm older, so my answer is based on many years of deciding what to do.

When we moved into our house over 18 years ago, the living room had god-awful peach wallpaper. I was not, at that time, in a financial position to re-do it. I purchased furniture to go with that color scheme. But hated it for many years.

My favorite colors tend to be the types found in seascapes: blues, aquas, greens. I used to buy clothes in aqua all the time. So my fashion "loves" sort of dictated the direction I'd move next.

I also, if given the financial means, would live near the ocean. I love the idea of a beach house.

That directed me toward having a shabby/chic "beach escape" living room. I have beachy/ocean type accents in a small way, but the colors of everything are neutral (white walls, white IKEA sofa) with accents in the colors I love.

Look at the big pieces first. If you are still uncertain, then think about getting something neutral, like white, cream, or tan, then accent with colors you love. The style will follow as you fill in. You can go to furniture stores and see what you are drawn to. You don't have to buy, simply sit it in, look around, see what makes you feel comfortable. It's different than websites, it's what you are surrounded by.

Your style & taste will change as you get older. You'll figure it out.

    Good luck.
