So.. I went off my birth control. I started at 15 on the Depo shot, switched to Loestrin 24 Fe when I was 21 (?), I'm now 24. My libido was totally fine on the Depo shot (or perhaps because I was still pretty young), and after switching to the pill, it dropped pretty bad. I also would randomly get breakthrough bleeding to the point that it was like my period, but a week early. It usually occurs when I'm stressed out--and I just started a new job a few weeks ago. Anyway, I started getting it again a couple of weeks ago, it kept going for about a week. I finally just got angry with all the side effects and decided not to deal with it anymore, so I stopped taking it--Saturday was the last day I took a pill.
I haven't really had any side effects, besides the breakthrough bleeding happening for another day or two, and I'm honestly a little freaked out by it. I've been researching it and women have all sorts of problems: headaches, depression, acne, weight gain/loss, all sorts of things. I'm just a little worried thinking that it's coming, you know? What my question is, is how long after stopping birth control did you get side effects, and what sort of side effects were you getting?
Re: Going off of birth control, *not* having side effects & kinda weirded out?
You get the weight gain, the acne, etc due to the pill/bcp itself, not by discontinuing its use.
Seriously, Tarpon? Many dermatologists prescribe BCP for acne. When I went off a couple months ago, I defnintely noticed an increase in acne. Many women also experience worse periods (cramps, heavier flow, etc), so maybe that is what she is referring to?
OP, it can take awhile for your body to adjust not having the hormones. Maybe you won't notice much of a difference off of BCP. The only big things I have noticed is getting zits around AF and I am a little crampy the week before AF. My period has actually gotten lighter and shorter since going off BCP, which is strange since the reason I went on them in the first place is because I got 2 AF's a month!
Oh yeah, I know that -- and bcp will be prescribed for many other things.
Remember that every patient is different and what affects one patient may not affect another.
You've been off a week. Relax. :-)
Maybe you won't get any side effects and just go back to being who you were.
I haven't gone off the pill, but I've changed pills three times in the past few years. None of the changes happened within a week; they were more gradual. Don't stress and take what comes. You don't necessarily know that anything out of the ordinary will happen to you! Be hopeful!
I went off almost two years ago after using bcp for ten years. I had horrid cramps during AF for about 6 months, then they got a lot better. I have been struggling with acne ever since, though. I never had acne pre-pill, so it's been a tough adjustment. You may notice an increased sex drive, too, so take the good with the bad!
Good luck, op. I hope your adjustment is easy. Just remember that you've been on artificial hormones for a long time so your body needs to readjust.
Tarpon: Actually, yeah, apparently a lot of women get all sorts of side effects after stopping birth control. Google it!
Everyone else: Thank you guys! I've just been wondering about it because nothing has really happened so far--a bit of a case of too much WebMD, apparently.
I was on the Depo shot for 7 yrs and 1 yr of Trinesa BCP afterward.
I had a few side effects starting at 3rd week for 3 months when stopping Trinesa BCP (2011). I was sometimes dizzy, exhausted, headaches that came and went but one day magically, all was well. My cycle didn't change though, stayed at 28 days for a yr (all of 2011) and then changed to 26 days in 2012 (I'm currently TTC) so I've paid extra attention to my ovulation, cycles, etc. You might be lucky and not get any side effects!
I got horrible acne for 6 months. I also am now sex-ready wet at all times! Lol. Seriously tho, I thought I had an infection but it was explained to me that this is how it's supposed to be.
This exactly! I've been off for 3 months now and the acne has come back horribly, but my sex drive is actually there. H keeps asking what is wrong, because he can't keep up. When on the pill my drive was so low that I didn't even want touched, and it took a lot to get ready.
Hopefully you only get some of the good side affects :-)
