Vet noticed some wierd scabby looking dandruff on Maya at her vet appt in September/October. (He ran the flea comb through and it was on the comb.) He asked if she has been scratching more than normal, which she hadn't been, and then said it was probably nothing to worry about.
Last night I was running my hand along her back, and it felt like she had raised moles all over her skin under her hair. I took a flea comb and kept combing until they were all gone and again, scabby looking pieces and a ton of dandruff came off on the comb. I combed until it was smooth. It didn't seem to bother her.
She is 5. I do not bathe her at home and she gets groomed (hand scraped/show cut) every 8 or so weeks. After some google research this seems to be common in mini schnauzers, but i'm wondering if her dog food has something to do with it? I feed her Fromm Four Star (rotate between the flavors, she doesn't seem to have a particular favorite). She has had some sensitivities/issues w/grains in treats in the past so i'm wondering if I should switch to the grain free version? Or another food entirely?
Thoughts?
ETA: I called my local pet store and have these choices for grain free food (this is what he quickly listed on the phone, although i'm sure they have more):
From Four Star Grain Free (he had 2 of the 4 flavors in stock and they were both fish)
Taste of the Wild
California Natural (which I actually used to feed Maya when we first got her, but the other pet store that I went to stopped carrying it and that's why I switched to the Fromm)
Wellness
Annamaet (apparently it is made in PA, it is a 4 star food on dogfoodanalysis.com)
Re: Could dog food possibly causing schnauzer's scabby dandruff?
There are a whole host of reasons that could cause skin issues in a pup. Allergies are one of the primary causes of skin problems in dogs, but the one thing that surprises me is that you don't notice her itching. Allergies issues of any sort cause dogs to be itchy so it would surprise me if changing her food would help.
I would discuss this again with your veterinarian, there are quite a few possibilities that may cause skin changes and not necessarily cause them to itch more. Some which would be good to catch sooner rather than later.
Ditto.
I like Fromm's Surf and Turf grain-free food. Before I switched to a grain-free food, Raven's skin was uber flakey and itchy.
They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
