Traveling to Philly-Hotels/food

My husband and I are traveling to Philly to see some Family and are looking for hotels that arn't too expensive. We have a rental car so we don't mind if its a little bit out of the city to make it cheaper. I found one in Cherry Hill, and it has the rooms that are all themed. It looks cool online but I am not sure if it is as good as it looks. Any other suggestions for hotels would be great! We also are looking for places to eat or things to do that are less touristy. Those are always the best places to eat! Any info would be great! Thanks!

Re: Traveling to Philly-Hotels/food

  • The savings of a hotel in cherry hill will probably be spent on bridge tolls and parking if you plan on coming to the city to eat and site see. Have you accounted for that?
  • What is the name of this hotel? If it is the one I am thinking of, pretty sure it is known for hookers and cheating husbands, not sure I would want to sleep in those beds

    This.

Whenever I travel, I have always had luck with Hotwire for hotels. I've stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Montreal and the W in New York for less than $100 per night, for example. I just did a quick search and there are quite a few options for centrally located Philly hotels that are even less than that at the moment.

Only issue with this is then you have to pay for parking. Maybe look at the Main Line or King of Prussia, it's 20 minutes from center City Philly.

  • If I was going to visit a big city, I would definitely stay in town.  Even if you stay in the burbs, you'll be paying for parking if you're coming into the city and you'll have to deal with traffic

Where specifically are you going to be spending most of your time?  If you are going to be in center city, I would skip the rental car and get a hotel in town. You can walk or use public transit

If your family is in the burbs maybe stay near them and use public transit to get in the city.

Agreed. The cost of daily parking is going to be the same cost at a hotel or driving in.

Also somewhere like kop  is twenty minutes in optiminal conditions. I've never made it from cc to kop in that time.

Old city has hotels too although it is a touristy area there is plenty of fantastic non tourist restaurants!

  • Wow thank you all for the helpful feedback! I'm not sure how much time we will be spending in the city, we will have 1 day out in East amptom for family and 1 day down to southen new jersey for family as well, so we need a rental car for sure. The hotel we were thinking of was the Feather Nest Inn in Cherry Hill, but  I do not want to go there if there are hookers and cheating husbands LOL I think we will spend one day just relaxing in the hotel,  I will just be getting back from a 6 month deployment and we really just want to do anything that involves spending time together. He has never been to Philly though so I really want to show him the city and sights. We will also be there in early march so It will be kind of chilly! The only reason I wanted a hotel outside of the city was becuase I thought it would be cheaper, but I totaly forgot about tolls and if its around the same cost I mine as well just stay center city!

Are there any favorite little cafe's or sandwich places you would recommend, for non tourist attractions?

I looked up the reviews on TripAdvisor just to see what it said.  I think this sums it up pretty well:

All and all this IS NOT A PLACE TO TAKE YOUR SWEETHEART TOO. IT IS MORE LIKE A "HIT AND SPLIT, GET YOUR FREAK ON, NO COMMITMENT" TYPE OF ROOM, VERY GHETTO!!!. NEVER WOULD GO BACK HERE AGAIN!!!!

I would recommend staying in the city too.  Yes, you said you are going to be visiting family in NJ but it's easy to access both areas from Center City and you'll probably enjoy the greater dining and entertainment options available in the city.

  • Staying in the city would be much more fun and you can get great prices with Priceline's Name Your Own Price option. People are put off by it because you don't know what hotel you'll be at until after your price has been accepted but I've named my own price many times now and always been happy.

As for parking, there are less expensive places to park. The hotels will probably run around $20-$30 a day but there is always less expensive parking within walking distance. If you know where you'll be, check back with us and we can help you out with that as well.

Personally, I like the touristy Philadelphia locations. Our museums are awesome and it really isn't a trip to Philly without a stop at Pat's and Geno's to determine which steak you prefer. Reading Terminal Market is also a must for great food and a good Philly experience. Check out http://www.uwishunu.com/ for events that will be going on while you're here.

  • Omg. Don't stay there. I've passed this place a trillion times and all my h and I do is make hourly jokes.
  • I am so glad I came on and asked you ladies! I would have been so upset, so thank you!

Right now I am looking for hotels for March and they are about $130/night and are thinking the Holiday Inn in the Historic Township.

However there is another hotel for $100/night, the Rodeway Inn. I looked up reviews and the last one in November say is was being re-modeled and the pictures looked nice. But the outside pictures I couldnt get a good idea. Any cheating husbands or hookers at this one?

Thanks again for all the help! You saved me a lot of trouble! Much appreciated!

    -Kim

  • The holiday in is centrally located. We used them

For our wedding. Staff isn't amazing though. Also take a peak at the Thomas bond house and Morris hotel. They are both smaller.
