DH and I are about to take on some tile projects. I am going to start with an easy ceramic tile backsplash to get a feel for it. Have you used a tile cutter (for scoring tile), or would most of you recommend just renting or purchasing a wet tile saw? I've borrowed a wet tile saw and have seen it used, but haven't operated it myself. I'd probably feel more comfortable using (and buying) a tile cutter with scoring blade. But I don't know if they're too cumbersome to bother with.
Also, I'm considering using some tile on the backsplace that has some glass accents. Do glass tile cut any differently than ceramic or other stone? I.e. can I use a scoring blade on them? Or a wet saw?
Down the line we might tile our kitchen floor as well (which is very small- 6 ft by 10ft.), so in the end it might be best to just buy a saw. DH is adverse to doing this because (1) we live in very small house with little storage for tools and (2) we don't plan on undertaking any other tile projects for a long time. There's also the possibility that we just hire a handyman to do it for us if I find it's too much hassle.
TIA!
Re: DIY tile- wet saw or tile cutter?
I woudld totally do the wet saw route. DH has tiled backsplashes, bathrooms, and one cealing so far. With the cutter you will not be able to make as exact cuts and you will have more waste due to breakage.
If space for storage is an issue, rent one.
RE: Glass. If you mean the little mini square ones, those do not get cut. The come on 12"x12" sheets and to get them to size, you cut the "fabric" they are attached to, not the tiles themselves.
If you're dealing with larger glass tiles, then it would probably cut differently than ceramic/porcelian. You need to ask the tile guys about cutting glass. You might not be able to? I am not sure on this.
