Intro to Yoga

My husband has fibromyalgia.  His doctor told him that doing yoga would help.  I pulled out a yoga book that I've had for ages and have been trying to do with him some of the poses that are labeled "beginner."  It hasn't been working.  Half of the poses he can't do at all, the others he can only hold for a few seconds and then says it hurts too much and has to stop.  I was wondering if there's some kind of pre-yoga we can do that will get him in better shape and then hopefully give the beginner poses another try?

Re: Intro to Yoga

  • It would probably be better for him to go to a beginner yoga class so the instructor can make accomodations, or, better yet, a one-on-one class to get him started.
  • I wouldn't recommend learning yoga from a book.  I would suggest that he go to a therapeutic yoga class and not a regular yoga class.  Most yoga teachers aren't properly taught how to teach yoga to people with health issues.  Better still he could go to an Ayurvedic physician that can show him what gentle yoga positions are good for him.

A good alternative to yoga is Hanna Somatics Exercises.  I practice yoga but I find that these exercises actually release muscle tension a lot better than yoga.  They are incredibly simple and yet effective.  Hopefully you have a good Hanna Somatics Educator in your area that can teach him the exercises.

  • Im not sure about your husband's age so don't get the wrong idea when I reference my dad who is 72....he has had Parkinson's for over a decade and exercises 3 times a week which has helped him fend off the progression of this disease immensely but his balance and flexibly are off...I found a yoga studio by their house that offers "Chair Yoga"...and while a lot of seniors participate it is designed for those that may have some physical limitations like your husband...they do a lot of great poses on a chair so they don't have to get up and down off the floor or hold any pose they may be unable to do...its still a great workout and really designed to help every, regardless of their ability, to reap the benefits of Yoga.  A good instructor will provide many accommodations to make the class safe....good luck!
  • Welcome to yoga workout.

You should start this exercise for your better mental and physical life.

It will bring a lot of health benefits in your coming life.
