Paging Harrison Bergeron

(If you haven't read that story, you can find it here: http://instruct.westvalley.edu/lafave/hb.html)

http://www.babble.com/CS/blogs/strollerderby/archive/2008/11/09/they-say-short-kids-can-grow-with-hormone-therapy.aspx

Last I checked (so, like, 10 seconds ago), being short isn't life-threatening. It doesn't affect your health. It doesn't make you stupid or incapabale of caring for yourself. It doesn't need to be "cured".

I'd never put my child on HGH. It's ridiculous. I want my child to be MY CHILD, with all the attendant quirks and differences that would make her unique.

I just don't know what's wrong with people today, srsly. There is no need to medicate everything away so that we're all just a mediocre as everyone else.

Re: Paging Harrison Bergeron

  • Have you ever seen the movie version of that, BM?  It's actually a fairly decent adaptation.  The stuff it leaves out I can live with.

It has Sean Astin in it as well.

  • I haven't. <running off to Netflix>

  • <shrug>  My childhood BFF's brother took meds (IDK which kind) to increase his height.  He was 15 and just 4'4", with serious hormone/gland issues and no hope of getting any taller.  BFF at 18 was only 4'11".  Her brother would've had to jump through several hoops to drive, etc.  He chose and his parents allowed him to take meds until he turned 16.  He's now 5'8" and happy.

    I can't say I blame him.

  • Holy crap!  Eugene Levy as the President!

The cast also includes Howie Mandel, Emmanuelle Chiriqui and Hayden Christensen.

  • Nicole, that's one thing - I might consider it if it would seriously impact my kid's life.

But they suggested it for my brother, who ended up being 5'7" all on his own. They told my mother life would be easier if he were taller; people wouldn't make so much fun of him, and it would be easier to get girls. No, I'm not kidding. She told them to shove it (gee, where was that when the doctors were suggesting ridiculousness for me?), and my brother's fine. Was, in fact, wildly popular in school, and still is with the ladies.

For every person that could use medical intervention for something, there are 100 who don't need it and yet have had it foisted on them or suggested to them. That's the ridiculous part.

  • On that note, Bmom, I could not agree more.
