SAD lamps???

Anyone use lamps to help treat Seasonal Affective Disorder?  I'm in the market, as I'll try anything at this point....but there seems to be no concensus on what works and what doesn't.  Anyone with experience care to chime in?  Thanks!

Re: SAD lamps???

  • Yes, they do work.  My psychiatrist is with UCLA and knows the doc who is running further studies.  Only the light box gets the job done.  You need something with 10,000 lux or higher and you need to sit in front of it (18-24 inches) for 30 mins daily between  6 and 8am.  The good ones cost about $300 and are as big as a suitcase.  As much of a pain as it sounds, the light box is the equivalent of increasing dosage of an antidepressant.  It also takes about as long to work (2 weeks).  I start the light (her name is Lucy, btw) in mid-October and end around mid-March.  And yes, I do it EVERY day.  If I miss a day, it feels like missing a day of medication (if you know what that feels like).

Don't start without consulting a doctor first.  I'm not sure what your situation is, but if you don't feel a shift in mood when the time changes, you may do just fine by upping your exercise in the winter.
