Some Advice Please

Hello!

I am in need of some advice. Please be gentle and Thanks in Advance.

I am in my mid twenties and I just graduated with a B.A in liberal Arts. Throughout college I worked in retail in the mall at a clothing store. This past August I accepted a position with a childcare facility because I love working with children and wanted to see if I could handle it as I want to make teaching my career.

The position I took was with elementary students (4th and 5th) who were labeled ?EBD? or behavioral challenged students.  At first working there was a major challenge. I had to learn to adapt to my children though my boss offered me no real information about the childrens challenges and when I asked for help, she would provide it to solve for that moment and then just move on (no explanations).  Some of my children had severe behaviors and had been to jail while others had challenges like Aspergers or Autism.  Children wise- I was making it work. Each day was brand new and I faught hard to learn more about their behavior and what made them tick.  Colleague- wise- I hated them. Nobody would speak with me because I had the behavior kids and my boss just wasnt helpful.

Then as the school year went on, I got a performance review which was horrible. It was like every time I needed her assistance she would provide it but then document that I was incapable of doing my job. She would knit pick everything I did and offer no real guidance or help.  I chose to leave during winter break. I hated leaving my children but I needed to get out and find another job that would offer me more guidance.

This past week I went on two interviews for a well known and established childcare facility. The interviews were really informal. I went into them just being myself. I talked about the company and my strengths there at the school I was at. I talked about my behavior children and what I would do with them.

Monday I got the call that I was offered the position but when they called to offer it to me, they said my credentials would make me an assistant manager and that the lower position had been filled. Being that I need a job, I said yes.  Although now that it has sunk into my brain, I am feeling a little scared, anxious, nervous, and maybe feel like I shouldn?t have taken it because I feel under qualified for the position.  I only have the job above to compare it to and I know I shouldnt but I cant help it.  They are willing to train me but I only worked at a school from August to December but I guess graduating makes me more qualified (IDK) I guess what I want advice or an opinion on is for those of you who are managers or assistants, when did you feel like you were ready for that type of position and what helped you prepare for it? Also, Do you think that if I try it and find that I don?t like it and quit would make it look bad on my resume?

Re: Some Advice Please

  • If they hired you for the job knowing you don't have any management experience and are willing to train you, then they obviously have confidence in your ability to learn what you need to to get the job done. Go for it and give it 110%! Have some confidence in yourself.

  • Thank You! I guess I just needed to hear that. I've been inside my head thinking wthe worst....

I mean my meetings with interviewers were really informal and all we seemed to talk about was my previous company, and they had choice words for them. :o/

  • If THEY didn't like you previous company and thought you did well there given a tough situation, then they obviously think you have the "it" factor to do this job.

    Congrats.

Don't doubt yourself. You don't need to be fearful and mousey in a managerial role just becasue you've nebver done it before.

One piece of advice I got from a previous manager in my line of work was to always discuss problems UP. Never discuss your problems or shortcomings, fears or worries, with your workers or, for lack of a better word, "subordinates." Only discuss your issues with your mentor or manager.

  • don't doubt yourself.  they hired you.  give it your best and see how it goes.  they must see potential in you or they wouldn't have offered you the job.

i've been teaching almost 12 years at this point, and i still remember how i felt when i started--i wondered what the h*ll i was doing even thinking i'd be able to tackle such a huge job and how i ever could have been hired with this tiny amount of knowledge and experience. but where does someone get experience if not on the job?  go in there and tell yourself you're going to be great.  it will likely be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    good luck!

this. Also be very receptive to training and feedback. It's hard to take but you have to get good a taking feedback if you're going to make a move like that.

Thank you! This is such a great piece of advice! I am going to take this into my new experience.!

In my previous role, I always admitted my shortcomings and always owned up to my fault in certain situations. I guess I just still feel like a young college kid who is still trying to find my way in the world.

  • Thank you!

What grade do you teach? Its nice to meet fellow teachers on the boards!!!

  • its natural to feel some type of way, to feel nervous and anxious, but surely if they hire you they saw potential in you , don't think of the negative and the what if's because what if you are great and end up moving up in this position, you will be fine as long as you think positive, in the beginning its always weird now after a while if u feel unhappy it may not be where u need to be, but give it a try and think positive, I was a manager and it didn't hit me until a month or so in,
