YMCA

Also posted this on the Delaware Babies board but does anyone have any experience with the YMCA in either Newark or Elkton? I'm thinking of joining.

Re: YMCA

  • My sister has a membership because her oldest goes to the one on Kirkwood Hwy all of the time. It's within walking distance from their house and he goes to play basketball and stuff with his friends.

I was actually thinking of joining too. There's no joiner fee in January! I just don't know how much I would use it...

  • Few years ago I got sucked in with the free joiner fee and 2 years later I finially cancelled it.  The one on Kirkwood was so busy in the evenings that it got annoying.

  • I've only ever been a member of the one on Kirkwood...and I agree that it was way too crowded.  Although most gyms are this time of year from my experience.  My husband has talked about us re-joining the Y and I think once we have children we may, especially since they have daycare service...but until then I'm staying where we currently are.

If I remember correctly, the cardio machines had a 20 or 30 minute time limit on them and you had to take a number to keep track of when it was your turn...I like to spend more time then that on the treadmill.  Buttttt, if you want to have access to a pool, classes, a gym, etc, then I think the YMCA is a good idea.  My husband used to go to the downtown and the one on 40 and he doesn't remember the overcrowding or time limits, so that may just be a Kirkwood thing.

  • If I was to join I would mostly be going during the day on a weekday so I would assume it would be a little less crowded. The reason I want to join is actually for the free child watch while you are at the gym. My Gymboree membership is ending soon which is $79 a month (I got a deal that isnt extending) which is a lot but getting the free child watch at the YMCA would allow Annabelle to around other kids without me and I get some time to myself too. She is in the house with me all day every day and I really want her getting used to being around other people/kids so when it comes time for preschool but I'm not just leaving her for the first time.

  • I went to the Brandywine Y for awhile. I really liked the childcare, actually, and went during the day when it wasn't crowded!
