Crate Training a 2nd Dog

Good morning ladies!

I looked through the FAQs and couldn't find this answer so if it's in there, let me know.

We're thinking about adding a second dog to the household.  This would be a rescue and the dog we're looking at is about 1 year old.  My question is how do we handle the 1st dog while crate training the 2nd one?  When we got Wylie (dog 1), we put him in the crate for a bit, then would come in and let him out to show him we're coming back for him and extended the time each instance so that he got used to knowing we'd come back.  We did this while at home so do we crate BOTH dogs during this time or what is your suggestion?

Re: Crate Training a 2nd Dog

  • I've had my Aussie mix since 2008, and added a rescued pit bull in 2010. The Aussie was never crated (she came to me housebroken, and she's never been a chewer).

The pit bull was crated until he earned our trust and the Aussie was not -- there were no issues.

  • We had our two boys house trained when we got Molly.  She was in the crate until she was three while the boys had free run of the house.  Just crate train him like you would if you had one dog.

  • I am in a three dog household. The first dog got crated for a very short time. When I got my chihuahua she was crated and she cried a lot even though she was a rescue at 9 months old. She is still crated to this day at night and when we are gone. We recently got a mix puppy who is tiny, some sort of a chihuahua mix jack russell. The puppy cried so much we let her go with our chihuahua and they are both very happy. Maybe if you put them side by side that would be nice for them. (we tried that and they like being together)
