How much money do you save each month?

H and I are closing on our house February 28th. I'm such a worried and have been trying to figure out how much money we can save each month. I was just curious if the number I came up with is close to average, so ladies, how much money are you able to put into savings each month?

I tried to do this as a poll, but I can't get it to work:/

Re: How much money do you save each month?

  • We have an emergency fund, so any extra money is now going to debt.  Once H gets settled, I hope to put $200-300 more on debt a month - then snowballing it Dave Ramsey style until it's all paid for.  Then we will work on getting 6 months in savings.

I started mint.com when we got the house.  It's really helpful in seeing where money is going, where you can cut back and keep track of debt.  I have our bank accounts linked in, credit cards (no balance but we put gas and groceries on it for rewards), student loans and retirement.  it's really nice to see it all in one place.  HTH

  • We are also focusing on paying off some debt from our renovation projects last year. Once that's done, we will probably put away 10-15% of our income per month.

  • we don't really have a set amount we save.  we keep our chequing account at $5000 and put anything extra into savings.

  • No including 401K, I put a bare minimum of $200 into savings each month.  I usually put more than that in but some months are harder than others.  I usually put all money that came from gifts (birthday, Christmas, ect) into savings too, because it's money you wouldn't normally have.  And I put 1/2 to 3/4 of taxes into savings depending on if there are repairs needed around the house.

Buying a house seems a lot more scary than it really is.  Likely you'll be able to save more money than you expect.  Just don't panic the first month you live in your house, there will be a lot of surprise expenses.  My house was move in ready, but was missing things like closet racks, a hood for the stove, and other inexpensive things that added up quickly.

  • We are saving about $1k per month for the first few months of the year.  We are going to switch to saving less and putting more toward debt.  We will probably switch April 1.

YES! It's really easy to set a budget but Mint makes it so much easier to follow through. The little things add up. Knowing DH can see every swipe of a card makes me stop and think about my purchases.

Don't get overwhelmed with a new house. There are going to be extra costs the first few months. We bought a brand new house but still had some work to make it ours.

Good luck and congrats on the new house!

I'm the saver, H is the spender.  We have fun money allotted to each of us each month.  Once it's gone, it's gone.  It's really making H see how the little stuff adds up (Mcdonald's here, coffee there...).  He did well last month, this month he's already down to $11.  Leftovers do get rolled over in a special pot for each of us for a bigger purchase (I want a desk, H wants window tints).  Mint makes it so easy to track too!
