I need help ASAP please re: sick kitty

My cat got very sick last month.  She had a poor prognosis.  Her kidneys were shutting down and she had the worst UTI the vet has ever seen.  Luckily, they saved her life and she is thriving.  Her last b/w showed her kidney levels at basically normal but she still has signs of infection.

Our vet doesn't have 24 hour care so she spent three nights at the closest emergency vet.

She is still on antibiotics (25 mg Zeniquin, 1/2 pill a day) until they can definitely rule out that she is infection-free.  She has been on this antibiotic since 12/17. My husband and I are idiots and we didn't realize she is completely out and our vet closed at 2.  They are closed tomorrow.

I called the emergency vet and they don't have that medication.  The front desk lady said they won't prescribe her anything else.  Are you trying to tell me there is only ONE broad spectrum antibiotic she could take?  My husband is trying to get a hold of them now to talk to a vet.

I am panicking over her going two nights without antibiotics.  I feel horrible.  We almost lost her and now she's doing so well and I can't believe we dropped the ball.

I called the other emergency vet and they said that not only do they not have Zeniquin, they won't give her anything without doing a urinalysis.  We've already spent $4k and I can't imagine having to spend another $500 for two nights of antibiotics.

What do I do now??  Is she going to be okay going two nights without the pill?  She is on subq fluids still but with less frequency.  Should we give her extra fluids to flush her out a bit?  Would that help at all?

Any advice please :(  I am hoping someone will come in here and tell me it's not nearly as big of a deal as I'm making it out to be, to chill the eff out, and call the vet Monday morning.

ETA small update.  I talked to SIL who was a vet tech.  She said that since my kitty has been on the antibiotics for so long, she isn't concerned about 2 nights off esp since they might be discontinuing on Monday anyway.  DH is at a football party and he is stopping by the emergency vet on his way home to talk to a doctor just to be certain she will be okay until Monday.  We will do subq fluids tonight and tomorrow night to help her pee more.  I'm feeling a little better.

Re: I need help ASAP please re: sick kitty

  • I was going to say the same thing as your SIL.  She's been on the antibiotics for long enough that it it's likely she doesn't need them anymore, so I think that she will be okay.  I really wouldn't worry that much.  My dog got parvo last year and we did a lot of her care at home (I didn't have a lot of money at the time to hospitalize her) so I understand you freaking out.  Just keep her fluids going and check with the vet first thing Monday, especially if you see her worsen.

  • Yes 2 days off should be ok especially with you monitoring her for any signs of deterioration.
