What do/did your parents do for a living?

Re: QOTD 1/14
They were both teachers. That is how they met. They both taught at the same school. My dad was 8th grade science and my mom was 7th grade math. My mom quit teaching for a bit when she was pregnant with me, and during that time my dad switched school districts. When my mom went back to teaching, it was at the same school as my dad, but this time my dad was 7th grade science and my mom was 8th grade math. They are both retired now.
My mom worked various jobs in a nursing home (PT Aide, medical records, central supply, activities...)
My dad was a union carpenter.
My mom was a teacher for almost 40 years before she retired. My father was a marine and then pumper-gauger at Hess (basically he stopped those big oil tanks from overfilling) for 20 years before he was forced to retire.
However, both my parents, now being retired are busier then they were when they were working. Volunteering for many different VA organizations keeps them busy!
We'll start with my dad because he's the easiest, LOL. He has been a college professor at the same school for almost 30 years. He teaches geology, and science classes for education majors that are about how to teach science to their students.
My mother has done...lots of things, LOL. She currently works as the student teaching placement coordinator at the same college as my dad (weird since they're divorced...) and is also an adjunct professor there. She teaches developmental psychology and education law (mandated child abuse reporting and stuff like that). She has a degree in education and a degree in counseling, so in the past she's worked as an elementary school teacher and as a school counselor. She also works part time for her church doing Sunday school and all sorts of other things.
My stepmother also used to teach and is now retired. My stepfather has a really cool job. He works for a living history museum. During the off-season, he does historical research and presentations to schools and other places about life in the mid-1800s. When the museum is open, he dresses in period costume and runs the pharmacy, showing people what medical care was like during that time period.
When I was a baby, my mother worked for a moving company in the Bronx that she started working at when she was in HS. Once we moved to NJ and she had my brother she was a stay at home mom. When i was in 3rd grade she went back to work at a hospital as a secretary on the labor and delivery floor. I guess around 92 or 93 she started doing the birth certificates and has been doing that ever since.
My father has done a plethora of things in the financial services industry. he's worked for all the big name firms and has been with his current one since 1996. He does back office stuff. He usually switches positions every few years. I stopped keeping track of exactly what he was doing years ago.
My father was an IBMer for years. I am not exactly sure what he did. I know that before he retired, he was doing contractor procurement.
My mom was a buyer for a local department store.
My first step-mom was also an IBMer. I think that she did mainframe programming and support.
My current step-mom is an ER doctor.
My father has worked a few jobs, but for a long time was a technician. He was doing work wiring machines. He is uneducated but was very good at what he did. When the economy started to get bad, their work dropped and they laid off my dad, not because he wasn't good at what he did, but because he was too efficient and they did not have the work for him. They chose to keep several less efficient, lower paid people. It was heartbreaking. He became very depressed and stopped looking for a job after a while. Who was going to hire a 50 something year old man with no education? Now he works at an auto parts warehouse. His hours suck (11am-7pm) and he hates it.
My mom used to work in retail before I was born (and for a short time after). She decided she wasn't making enough money to pay for childcare so she left her job and stayed home with me, and started watching other people's children in her own home day care. She loves what she does and wouldn't change it for anything. She currently watches only a fraction of the children she used to, but its very nice. She has a 2 year old little girl (will have another child next year from the same family as the mother is pregnant), a three year old girl and a four year old girl. I love going over there!
My mom was a teacher and is not a principal. My dad has had a few jobs. Most of his career he was a contractor/carpenter. When I was about 8 or 9 he began buying apartment buildings and multi-family houses. He's been doing that pretty much since. He also buys and sells metal milling machines. He's built some cool things out of metal, like a steam engine.
Pocky- where do you live? My class would be interested in seeing presentations like what your dad does.
Growing up my parents were superintendents (My dad is a renovation contractor) ...we moved A LOT because they would get transfers etc... we must have moved over 25 times and myself since moving out on my own added to that in my life time at least 30 times...
Since divorcing mom is now an aromatherapist and author,
Dad is still into renovation contracting... which my brother apprenticed him in.

My parents own their own company. My dad is a woodturner. He makes works of art, hollow bowls and vessels and such. He's very well known for what he does. My mom handles the business end of things, typically. They both make the steel tools that dad uses to turn, mom's the one who sells them and runs the website. They travel around to trade shows and such.
My dad travels a lot more than my mom did when we were young since she had to stay at home with my brother and me. When we were on summer break, we'd get to go a lot. Sometimes dad would leave for a month at a time though and be working out of country. Although my mom was handling the business stuff, everything is at our house, so it was like she was a SAHM.
