Doing a dog DNA test
Hello everyone. I bought a dog breed DNA test kit and I will send it in tomorrow. Just for fun, what mix do you all think he is? His name is Bubba, he is about 1 year old and about 55 pounds. And in case you can't tell from the pics, he has long feathering on his ears, his coat is about an inch long but lies flat, and he has webbed feet. When he stands, his tail is curved like a C and will arch over his back (when he's not wagging it!). My best guess is Border Collie, Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, Australian Shepherd, and Lab. What do you all think?

They're not really worth the money. They're not accurate.

Also, another one of the old regulars used a test on her dog, who looked exactly like a Rottweiler. The results said he was a poodle.
Thanks for your opinion, but I wasn't asking if I should do it or not. I already sent in the DNA sample and I was wondering if you all had any breed guesses. lol I'm aware its a waste of money-- the whole thing is for fun and curiosity anyway. But I will let you all know the results.
And I have never heard of an English Shepherd, but I looked it up and the first picture does look a lot like him. That isn't one of the breeds that the test has in the data bank though.
I think her point was that when the test comes back and says your dog is part chihuahua, don't believe it; so, in other words, it's totally pointless.
On behalf of the DNA test, I got one done from the same place. All they take is DNA, and the test results were spot on. A lot of the breeds were too small a percentage to list on the main chart but even the several they listed with too low a percentage seemed like perfect candidates for our dog.
Two out of three of the main breeds we were expecting were listed on the main chart, even if one of them was a few generations back; the third we were expecting was also listed, but only as 2% of her DNA. I'm not saying they're always going to be 100% accurate, but for all that "my dog came back as a Chihuahua" complaints there are far more satisfied people.
Some important things to keep in mind:
1) It's for fun, not fact.
2) Even though it's for fun, it's DNA. There is usually a ring of truth there! It's not total BS.
3) Dogs have as far as I know, the most manipulative DNA there is. That means a Chihuahua could breed with a crazy different sized dog and the puppies could be any size between the two parents, and they can also look nothing like the parents if they're enough of a mix breed, getting their build and looks instead from previous generations. I think there are a ton of ignorant people on this fact.
4) You've got to wonder about the people that get it so wrong. Do they follow the instructions? Do they have multiple dogs that could be messing up the results?
PS: The Poodle can have the markings of a Rottie; it's called Phantom coat.

The results are in! He is a real mutt! While the results are surprising (Saluki, really???), they are all plausible. I can see it.
