I am getting ahead of ourself...we haven't even put in a bid. But its by far my favorite. Huge space for the money.
But I think the easter bunny decorated it.
A bright pink bedroom, a bright yellow bedroom, a purple and seafoam green room, pale pink kitchen, pink bathroom, and a blue living room with teal carpets.
In all, 6 rooms need painted, and 1 room + hallway need new carpet.
I know its impossible to tell, but about how much do you think this would cost us, assuming 6 large cans of paint, hiring some helpers to paint (not necessarily professionals), and hiring someone to do the carpet (not expensive carpet, we have messy small children...)?
Re: Buying our first house, it needs help.
we're doing the same thing. Our bid got accepted and now we're having people come to our house and give us estimates. Its not til saturday but I can let you know what the average price is. We're looking into paint and new floors. The whole house needs it. But its very exciting.
As far as I know now paint is not that expensive depending where you go. Some places have gallons of paint for 5 bucks. like Lowes or Home Depot. and flooring is by the sq ft anywhere from a buck to 3 or 4 bucks for sq ft. Depends on how big the house is. Hope that helps
we recently bought a new home and painted about 1200 sq ft of it. I don't recall the price but we went with sherwin williams paint (truly great quality. don't get paint based only on price. a lot of it really is terrible quality). They were running a 40% off entire purchase sale, which saved us a LOT. check retailmenot.com to see if you can find some coupons or discount codes for them.
we did a 'smartstrand' carpet which is incredibly stain resistant - look into that. it ran us a couple thousand....but that was over about 1400 sq ft. i want to say it was somewhere between $3 and $4 per sqft? not much different than many of the other carpets.
to be on the safe side i'd budget 3-4k for the project in case you need multiple coats of paint. the good news is paint can be done at any time (although i'm sure you wont want to look at those easter colors for long!). I would definitely suggest doing paint before carpet though!

I have lived in my home for over 18 years. Every room has been painted at least once.
The best paint, IMO (and Consumer's Report last time I looked, best bargain) is Behr indoor paintm which is sold at Home Depot. Get eggshell finish, which is semi-glossy but less glossy than semi-gloss. Easy enough to clean, but a bit more elegant looking than semi-gloss.
The gallons run about $20-$25 each (I've never seen paint for $5 a gallon), but that's pretty true of any paint worth it's value.
If you are going to do any rooms in off white, choose a standard paint color provided by the manufacturer. For example, Behr has a paint called "Swiss Coffee", which for me is the perfect shade of off white. The front of the paint can actually says "Swiss Coffee", it's not specially mixed. I have used it in several rooms and hallways that feed into each other, so I don't have to worry about matching paint colors when I want to repaint, or paint a hall or room that was previously another color. They have other basic whites/off whites. They have sales 2-3 times a year, with $5 off per gallon, but you have to send the receipt and scanner code off the container for a rebate, it's not discounted at the store.
Because you mentioned the colors these rooms are now, you are going to need a primer to paint over the existing paint before painting. And you will probably need 2 coats of paint. Depending on the age of the house, most homes have rooms sized 10 x 10, or 12 x 10, or 12 x 14. Each of those rooms would need at least one coat of primer, and 2 coats of paint........probably 2 gallons of each color for each room. So, if you are looking at painting 6 rooms x 2 x $25 = $300 for paint. That doesn't include the ceilings, which if they are already white, would probably need one coat after you wash them.
You will need rollers, roller pans, brushes for trim, tarps or plastic sheets to protect the floors, probably another $200 in supplies. A good A-frame ladder if you don't have one.
Carpet prices vary from geographic area to geographic area. I paid around $300 to carpet my daughter's bedroom with average grade carpet, it's 10 x 12. We didn't care about the price, because it's black and probably won't be staying long after she leaves, LOL.
Good luck! Buying your home and preparing to turn it into "your own" is so exciting!
